The Libraries have the primary mission of meeting the essential information, intellectual, teaching, learning, and research needs of the University; in order to fulfill this mission for all members of the University community, we ask that those using the Libraries observe the following courtesies:
The Libraries' policy regarding the use of cellular telephones attempts to strike a balance between the maintenance of a library environment conducive to research and study on the one hand while, on the other, accommodating the increasing ubiquity of cellular telephones on campus. Common sense and courtesy is the order of the day.
Owners of cell phones are expected to turn telephone ringers off, or to the lowest volume level while in the library. If cell phone use is required, users will be expected to move to a location away from fellow students so conversations will not disturb others. Loud conversation is both unnecessary and unacceptable. Extensive cell phone conversation while in the library is discouraged.
Areas in each library considered designated quiet areas are off-limits to cell phone use. In Hagerty Library, the lower level, and areas near the restrooms on each floor may be used for quiet, brief cell phone conversations. The lounge areas immediately outside of each of the Health Sciences Libraries, or adjacent to the Computer Lab in the Hahnemann Library, are the appropriate areas for phone use.
Failure to comply may result in loss of library privileges and the implementation of a more stringent cellphone use policy.
Police your trash and use the requisite receptacles. Please report any spills that occur to the Library Staff so that the spills can be cleaned as quickly as possible.
What food and drink ARE allowed:
- Beverages in sturdy, spill-proof containers, including glass or plastics bottles with screw-on caps or "sports-type" tops and spill-proof plastic or metallic cups.
- In Hagerty Library only, snack food, such as candy bars, nuts, pretzels, pastry, and cookies is permitted.
What food and drink ARE NOT allowed:
- Beverages in paper, plastic, or styrofoam cups, cans, or bottles without screw-on caps.
- Pizza, burgers, fries, fruit, hoagies, sandwiches, salads, etc.
- Alcohol is strictly forbidden.
- Ordering delivery of food to the library.
Where acceptable food (Hagerty only) and drinks ARE allowed:
- At tables or desks
- In study carrels
- Lounge chairs and sofas
Where NO food or drink are allowed:
- At computer stations
- Near library-owned laptops
- Near media equipment (scanners, video players)
- At copiers and microfilm scanners
- In stacks and shelving areas
- In the Archives and Special Collections room.
While the Libraries are expected to provide a quiet environment for research and study, it is recognized that there is sometimes a need for quiet conversation. Restricting such conversation to appropriate areas shows respect for other users of the Libraries.
In the Health Sciences libraries, the areas closest to the circulation desks, and those areas with "lounge-type" seating, are acceptable areas for quiet conversation.
In Hagerty Library, the Lower Level is designated as the area where conversation and group work are allowed, with the exception of the Computer Classrooms (L-13, L-14 and L19) where conversation should be kept to a minimum. Patrons are particularly asked to be careful about excessive noise and conversation in the Atrium area (near the trees) on the first floor; noise in this area carries directly to the upper floors.
If there is a need for extensive conversation for the purposes of group collaboration or study, a Group Study Room should be used. All other areas of the Libraries should be considered designated quiet areas.
Those who fail to follow the policy will be asked to either conform or leave the library. Additional sanctions may be imposed on repeat offenders.
Non-Drexel offenders may be barred from the library entirely.
