The Department of Domestic Science and Arts (originally known as the Department of Domestic Economy) was one of the founding programs at the Drexel Institute.  The program fulfilled Anthony J. Drexel's desire to establish a school for the education of women.  The department offered classes in dressmaking, chemistry, biology, physics, economics, dietetics, millinery, cooking, housekeeping, laundry, and normal courses for the training of teachers, among other programs.  In 1918, Drexel offered special war courses for women under the School of Domestic Science and Arts.  The first bachelor's degrees were granted by the department in 1919.  In 1922, Domestic Science and Arts became the School of Home Economics.
