Progress towards an engineering school started as early as 1893 with course offerings in the mechanic arts, science and technology, and technical departments. Courses in these departments would eventually evolve into the engineering curriculum. In 1897, Professor Arthur J. Rowland organized an advanced two-year course in electrical engineering for graduates of the mechanic arts department. By 1899, the program was fairly well developed, and in 1900 the school's administration established a department of electrical engineering that offered a two year curriculum. In 1906, the school of engineering was formally compartmentalized into mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering. The final step in the evolution toward a college level program came in 1914 when President Hollis Godfrey established the engineering school as part of a major consolidation of academic programs. The new engineering school had stricter entrance requirements and offered four-year courses that led to a Bachelor of Science degree.
