The mechanic arts department was one of the school's founding departments. The department served as a three-year program for young boys as a preparatory class for more advanced science and technical studies. Courses in the department included mathematics, science, language, drawing, and shop. Mechanic arts lost its department status in 1914 when the engineering school was established by Drexel president Hollis Godfrey.
