The early history of the Drexel Dragon
While the specific reason the name "Dragon" became associated with Drexel Athletic teams is unknown, the decison to change the name is documented in a small blurb in the Drexel student newspaper, the Triangle, from April 16, 1928:

The earliest graphic representaton of the Dragon can be found on the uniforms of the basketball team in a photograph that appeared in the 1929 student yearbook, the Lexerd:
In 1929, the Drexerd, a monthly magazine published by the Drexel student body, distributed a Dragon number for their December issue:
