When V.C. Castleman arrived in Philadelphia in 1898, the Drexel Institute had been in operation for less than ten years.
In her collection of photographs, three of the four images taken of building exteriors were of University of Pennsylvania buildings. Considering the make-up of West Philadelphia at the time, the high style of Penn's buildings must have stood out among the residential, business, and small industrial buildings that populated the area.
