It is the goal of the IEEE Life Sciences Portal to become a premier resource and community for knowledge, opportunity, and collaboration, enabling cross-disciplinary solutions in life sciences.

Traditionally, the term life sciences has referred to several branches of science, such as biology, medicine, anthropology, or ecology, that describe living organisms and their organization, life processes, and their relationships to each other and their environment. In contrast, engineering has usually meant the application of scientific and mathematical principles to practical ends such as the design, manufacture, and operation of efficient and economical structures, machines, processes, and systems.

However, partly driven by tremendous advances in technology, and partly by rapidly changing demographics, this distinction is fast becoming an anachronism. A recent article highlighting research at MIT provides an example of how traditional engineering methodologies are being applied to life sciences and thus blurring the lines between these two disciplines.

In light of these technological advances, the IEEE has developed the Life Sciences Portal with the goal of evolving into one of the premiere global resources for life sciences technologies, information, and activities. We seek to create new opportunities to introduce technology to new and different audiences and disciplines. Further, we seek to create a virtual community for stakeholders that have interests in technology and its application in life sciences. Groupwork Survival Guide

When you work in a group, you can accomplish more than you would if you were just learning on your own. Your group members may have some skills or knowledge that you don’t have. And you will find that you, too, have knowledge and skills that compliment your group members.

Furthermore, group work will help you learn how to play well with others – that’s super important to anyone in the working world. If you can figure out how to leverage your teammates’ abilities with your own, you can succeed in any team environment in the work world.
