Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics records, 1973-1997

The department of mechanical engineering began granting degrees in 1914. Its first department head, J. Harland Billings, was appointed in 1918. It became the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics in 1975. The collection includes correspondence, faculty meeting minutes, brochures detailing policies and guidelines for students, and a brief set of event files. A large portion of the collection consists of personnel records of department staff.

The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools certifies educational institutions to grant degrees and diplomas.  The collection consists of preliminary and final reports to the Middle States Association; research materials gathered in the preparation of these reports; and the records of the working groups established during the self-study.  The bulk of the records are from the re-accreditation that took place during the 1990s.

Microcomputing Program records, 1977-1985 (bulk 1983-1985)

In 1983, Drexel University launched its microcomputing program, requiring freshmen to buy or have access to Apple Macintosh computers.  With this program, Drexel became one of the first colleges in the nation (and the first university) to require students to purchase personal computers.  This collection contains materials relating to early developments in personal computing at Drexel, including working papers from 1984 and 1985 which discuss applications for personal computers in a variety of academic disciplines.  It also includes complete runs of early issues of Drexel publications and newsletters relating to microcomputing aimed at students, staff, and computer support consultants.  Newspaper clippings related to Drexel’s decision to require students to purchase Macintoshes, microcomputing program correspondence, and a few miscellaneous reports and pamphlets on computing in general can also be found with the collection.

James MacAlister papers, 1889-1941

UR 1.1 James MacAlister papers, 1889-1941, 0.66 cubic feet

James MacAlister (1840-1913) served as the first president of the Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry from 1891 to 1913. He was a proponent of vocational and technical education throughout his career. This collection documents his term as president, his views on education, and his involvement in the early history of the Drexel Institute. Records include MacAlister’s letters, a book that he published, lectures, and his personal notebook, as well as research notes believed to have been compiled by Harriet Worrell for the book Drexel Institute of Technology 1891-1941: A Memorial History. Of particular interest in the collection are letters to Booker T. Washington and Andrew Carnegie and correspondence with James Wilson and Wilson Brothers & Company, the architectural firm that designed Drexel’s first two buildings.

Ellen (Rushmore) McKeon graduated from Drexel’s department of domestic science and arts in 1898.  This collection includes photographs of instructors, students, and classrooms in the department of domestic science and arts.  It also has photos taken at Wissahickon Creek and three pictures from the women’s basketball team.  Identified individuals in collection are: Albert P. Brubaker, Ellen Morris, Katherine J. Coolidge, Helen M. Spring, Anna Anthony, and Maude G. Hopkins.
