International Polar Year

The International Polar Year (IPY) is a large scientific programme focused on the Arctic and the Antarctic from March 2007 to March 2009.

In order to have full and equal coverage of both the Arctic and the Antarctic, IPY 2007-8 covers two full annual cycles from March 2007 to March 2009 and will involve over 200 projects, with thousands of scientists from over 60 nations examining a wide range of physical, biological and social research topics. It is also an unprecedented opportunity to demonstrate, follow, and get involved with, cutting edge science in real-time.

The official web site for IPY is: http://www.ipy.org/

Here you will find extensive information about projects, research as well as a number of blogs covering a wide range of topics and on-site research. You can set up RSS feeds to stay on top of events and research.

Real time research on our global climate is critical. Stay informed.

Carl Linnaeus at 300!!

What was in the water in 1707? Leonard Euler was 300 on April 15, now Carl Linnaeus is 300 today!!!

Yes, the genius of genera was born today 300 years ago. Linnaeus brought organization to life. His great work, the Systema Naturae, ran through twelve editions during his lifetime (1st ed. 1735). In this work, nature was divided into three kingdoms: mineral, vegetable and animal. Linnaeus used five ranks: class, order, genus, species, and variety. What’s your favorite mnemonic for remembering the correct order?
Mine is: Kangaroos Play Cellos Orangutans Fiddle Gorillas Sing
