Happy Birthday Mr. Darwin!

This year is the 200 anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, whose observations of nature propelled theories of evolution of life on Earth. Hagerty library is commemorating this event with an exhibit on Darwin focusing on his trip to the Galapagos Islands on the HMS Beagle. On display is a copy of the book that started it all, On the Origin of Species… published in 1859. On display are materials about Darwin, Scopes Trial, public response to his theories and materials about the diversity of flora and fauna of the Galapagos. Also are display are Galapagos finches (on loan from the Academy of Natural Sciences), captured and preserved in 1901 whose variation in beak-shape from island to island, let Darwin to speculate about adaptation.
