Knovel – Engineering and Scientific online reference books

Knovel K-News features instructional tips on how to find specific data or information using online scientific and technical books availble through knovel.

To access knovel from the Library’s web site, go to Electronic Databases and then click on Knovel:Engineering & Scientific Online Reference.

Knovel K-News also provides RSS feeds of new content added, instructional tips and other announcements. Click the XML icon to view the K-News blog edition.

CQ Public Affair Collection is organized in 22 key public affairs subject headings—like Advocacy and Public Service, Education, Energy, the Environment, Health, and Transportation, etc. It features in-depth reporting on vital issues, statistical and historical analyses, historic documents and primary source materials, as well as a directory of key government, nonprofit, and private organizations in each of the major policy areas.

STAT-USA/Internet, a service of the U.S. Department of Commerce, is a single point of access to authoritative business, trade, and economic information from across the Federal Government. Click on ‘Site Search’ in the left column to explore various database categories such as Industry Sector Analysis Reports. For example, search for ‘Medical Devices’ to locate industry reports on medical devices.

TableBase is a database comprised of tabular information of a strategic nature. Many of the table records also have textual content which supports the data in the tables. The tables provide information such as: market share, market size, capacity, production, imports, exports, sales, product and brand rankings, forecasts, healthcare statistics and demographics. Tables are drawn from the more than 1000 sources that go into the Business & Industry database and from statistical annuals, brokerage reports, trade association reports, and governmental reports.

Transportation Research Board publications

The Transportation Research Board (TRB) is a division of the National Research Council, which serves as an independent adviser to the federal government and others on scientific and technical questions of national importance. The National Research Council is jointly administered by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine.

Provides access to reports such as Acoustic Rail-Break Detection Demonstration at MTA New York City Transit, Guidelines for an Alternative Transit Switch Design, and Synthesis of Information Related to Transit Problems, etc.

SIAM (Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics) journals online – RSS feeds

SIAM (Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics) journals online now provides RSS feeds of its new journal articles. To receive RSS feeds for new SIAM articles, go SIAM Journals Onlie, and click on the link for the journal you are interested in, for example, SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing. Right click on the XML button in the bottom right of the screen, below the journal cover image. and copy and paste the URL into your feed reader to receive feeds of new articles. Please refer to ‘Blogging as a tool : innovative approaches to information access’ for more information on how to use Bloglines (a web based free service to subscribe to different RSS feeds. Please also refer to “Using RSS to increase user awareness of e-resources in academic libraries” to learn more about feedreaders and other electronic resources that provide RSS feeds.

AZoMs Materials/Engineering RSS News Feed

The AZoM.com (the A to Z of Materials) was formed with the primary aim of increasing the use of Advanced Materials by the engineering and design community worldwide. AZoM has recently implemented an RSS news feed of 10 most current news articles. These articles change on a daily basis and can be found on the front page of the AZoM site.

Science in your backyard – USGS database

As reported in Marylaine’s ‘Neat New Stuff I found on the Net This Week‘, Science in your backyard is a database in which one can choose a state and find links to real-time information on that state’s water, drought, and earthquake activity, to biological, mineral and recreation resources, and Geological Survey news releases.

EarthTrends

EarthTrends is a comprehensive online database, maintained by the World Resources Institute, that focuses on the environmental, social, and economic trends that shape our world. It provides access to statistical data on various environmetal topics such as coastal and marine ecosystems, water resources and freshwater ecosystems, climate and atmosphere including air pollution data, population and health, energy resources, biodiversity and watersheds of the world. EarthTrends updates are also available through RSS feeds.

Cases from the National Society of Professional Engineers

The National Institute for Engineering Ethics provides access to several cases (1976-2001) from the National Society of Professional Engineers. See NSPE Code of Ethics for Engineers for detailed information about the principles of ethical conduct for engineers. See also Engineering Ethics Cases for cases from 1998, the Online Ethics Center for Engineering and Science for information on understanding ethics and Codes of Ethics and Conduct for sampling of guidelines and codes of ethics from scientific and engineering professional societies.
