SYNTHESIS: Digital Library of Engineering and Computer Science is an innovative information service for the research, development and educational communities in engineering and computer science. The basic component of the library is a 50- to 100-page electronic book that synthesizes an important research or development topic, authored by a prominent contributor to the field.

BiologicalInformatics.info is a Subject Tracer Information Blog developed and created by the Virtual Private Library. It is designed to bring together the latest resources and sources on an ongoing basis from the Internet for biological informatics (health informatics, neuroinformatics, biodiversity informatics and biomolecular informatics.

With the new Google Patent Search tool, one can search across more than 7 million patents. Each Google Patent Search result represents an individual patent. Click on the patent image to access full patent. It displays results based on their relevance to the specific search terms entered. One can also see number of details about each patent in the list of results. These include: patent title, U.S. patent number, filing date, assignee name, patent snippet, patent summary, claims, and drawings. 'Search within this patent' option is available to search the text of an individual patent for specific keywords and phrases. it also lists other patents that were cited by the patent described on the page and lists other patents that reference the patent described on the page.

Google Patent Search covers the entire collection of patents made available by the USPTO - from patents issued in the 1790s through those issued in the middle of 2006. It does not currently include patent applications, international patents, or U.S. patents issued over the last few months, but we look forward to expanding our coverage in the future

The National Institute for Engineering Ethics provides access to several cases (1976-2001) from the National Society of Professional Engineers. See NSPE Code of Ethics for Engineers for detailed information about the principles of ethical conduct for engineers. Engineers and ethicists participated in a workshop to discuss the responsible development of new technologies. Presenters examined four areas of engineering--sustainability, nanotechnology, neurotechnology, and energy--in terms of the ethical issues they present to engineers in particular and society as a whole. Approaches to ethical issues include: analyzing the factual, conceptual, application, and moral aspects of an issue; evaluating the risks and responsibilities of a particular course of action; and using theories of ethics or codes of ethics developed by engineering societies as a basis for decision making. Ethics can be built into the education of engineering students and professionals, either as an aspect of courses already being taught or as a component of engineering projects to be examined along with research findings. Engineering practice workshops can also be effective, particularly when they include discussions with experienced engineers. This volume includes papers on all of these topics by experts in many fields. The consensus among workshop participants is that material on ethics should be an ongoing part of engineering education and engineering practice.
