Formula SAE Collegiate Design Resources and Facebook Group

What is FSAE?

Formula SAE is a student design competition organized by SAE International (formerly Society of Automotive Engineers). The first competition was started back in 1978 and was originally called the Mini Indy. The concept behind Formula SAE is that a fictional manufacturing company has contracted a design team to develop a small Formula-style race car.

The prototype race car is to be evaluated for its potential as a production item. The target marketing group for the race car is the non-professional weekend autocross racer. Each student team designs, builds and tests a prototype based on a series of rules whose purpose is both to ensure onsite event operations and promote clever problem solving.

SEE: Rules & Important Documents and Drexel FSAE

Drexel Formula SAE is a team comprised of undergraduate students that designs and builds a race car from the ground up every year for international, intercollegiate competition.
FSAE Facebook Group: Drexel Formula SAE Information Resources and Tools

This group will serve to enhance awareness of various information resources available to participating Drexel students so that they can efficiently use them in their design of the prototype race car for this competition. You can post any material or books you need on the wall of this group. My Facebook ID is bhattjj@drexel.edu

Electrical and Computer Engineering – Computer Science Senior Design

Groupwork Survival Guide

When you work in a group, you can accomplish more than you would if you were just learning on your own. Your group members may have some skills or knowledge that you don’t have. And you will find that you, too, have knowledge and skills that compliment your group members.

Furthermore, group work will help you learn how to play well with others – that’s super important to anyone in the working world. If you can figure out how to leverage your teammates’ abilities with your own, you can succeed in any team environment in the work world

Library Resources for Drexel Smart House Project

The Drexel Smart House is a unique multidisciplinary project working toward the goal of creating a building that functions like a home and serves as a laboratory to continually conduct research on innovations to the home experience. Through student-led (undergraduate and graduate from all colleges and majors) research and design, the Drexel Smart House will explore the areas of health and wellness, environmental interactions, efficiency, entertainment and communications. Ultimately, this research and design will be implemented into an urban home where involved students will live, thereby studying the effectiveness of the new ideas and proving the benefit of the Smart House.

What resources the Senior Design Team used that Win $75,000 Phase II EPA Funding?

The senior design team of Eric Eisele, Courtney Reid, Dan Pugh, Sarah Byrnes, and Charlie Woods was awarded a Phase II People, Prosperity, and Planet Award from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  See Senior Design Team wins EPA funding for more details.

Eric and his team used several Library resources over a period of time.  These include:

Eric also needed some ASTM standards for the Solar Coating project. Using How Do I access ASTM, SAE, ASHRAE, ISO or ANSI standards? Any other standards? Eric was able to obtain ASTM standards that he needed for the project. Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering and Materials Engineering Site include a few resources that may also help in future for other projects. See also Cool Roofs and Cool Roofing Materials Database available from Heat Island Group Resources.

Eric also contributed in creating  Drexel’s web site for Sustainability and Drexel Green.

Congratulations to the Senior Design Team!

Finding chemical information using Google Trends

With Google Trends, you can compare the world’s interest in your favorite topics. Enter up to five topics and see how often they’ve been searched on Google over time. Google Trends also shows how frequently your topics have appeared in Google News stories, and in which geographic regions people have searched for them most.

I tried experimenting by searching different chemicals in Google Trends.

For example, searching for Acetic Acid, retrieved a news story about projected forecast for the world market of Acetic Acid by the year 2015.

World Market for Acetic Acid Projected to Reach 11.8 Million Tons in 2015, According to New Report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc.

See More News about Acetic Acid.

Some other examples:

Methanol

Ethylene Oxide

See More News about Ethylene Oxide.

Try this:

The Chemical Database from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Akron

The Chemical Database database will allow the user to retreive information for any of 25,496 hazardous chemicals or ‘generic’ entries based on a keyword search. Potential keywords include names, formula and registry numbers (CAS, DOT, RTECS, EINECS, Beilstein and Merck). Formula are represented in Hill format for searching and a more descriptive format for viewing.
