NEW! Contemporary Literary Criticism Online

Become the Contemporary Literary Expert you’ve always hoped you’d be!  We have just purchased from Gale the online version of Contemporary Literary Criticism.

Contemporary Literary Criticism Online presents significant published criticism on the works of novelists, poets, playwrights, short story writers, and other creative writers now living or who died after December 31, 1959. Each entry contains a biographical essay that discusses the author’s life, works, and critical importance; critical essays or excerpts taken from books, magazines, literary reviews, newspapers, and scholarly journals; and, where available, interviews with featured authors. Entries also provide suggestions for further reading.

CLC is part of Gale’s Literature Criticism Online offerings, and is fully indexed by author, title, and year of critique.  We have online access to these volumes from 1973 – present.  Hagerty’s Print Holdings for this resource will likely be going to offsite storage in the near future.

Google Books Settlement

So, from what I’ve read so far, this Google Books settlement looks like a really good opportunity for libraries, but there’s lots of fine print to look at, so feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.   Here’s how it will work for libraries:

    Library and university access

We’ll also be offering libraries, universities and other organizations the ability to purchase institutional subscriptions, which will give users access to the complete text of millions of titles while compensating authors and publishers for the service. Students and researchers will have access to an electronic library that combines the collections from many of the top universities across the country. Public and university libraries in the U.S. will also be able to offer terminals where readers can access the full text of millions of out-of-print books for free.

Jessamyn West has already culled the most crucial information more succinctly and usefully than I ever could, so see her blog post on librarian.net for all kinds of great background and commentary on Google Books.

Exports, anyone?

We now have access to the International Monetary Fund’s Direction of Trade Statistics database.  Learn all the torrid details of who’s trading with whom, and how much everone is spending.  I just learned that Luxembourg sent $336 Million in exports to Denmark last year, and $0 in exports to Lesotho.  I suppose that makes sense.

IMF has not graced us with the most user-friendly product, so here‘s a tutorial.
