free, fun, and totally geeky: WolframAlpha

I just fell in love with WolframAlpha; a self-described “computational knowledge engine” that can basically compute, graph, and analyse just about anything you ask of it.

Seriously.

Check out their examples page!

Here are the results when I searched Drexel University.

Results from any query can be downloaded as a PDF, and all include Source data at the bottom of the results.  Check it out from the site, or just try searching something (maybe “Philadelphia” or “30% of $25 USD in Euros”) from the widget below. It’s great fun!

On Trial: Gale Cengage Databases

We are currently trialling 3 database offerings from Gale Cengage.

All three offerings are available from this link

Dictionary of Literary Biography Complete is comprised of: Dictionary of Literary Biography (vols. 1-346) Dictionary of Literary Biography Documentary Series (50 vols.) Dictionary of Literary Biography Yearbook (23 vols.). Dictionary of Literary Biography includes biographical and critical essays on the lives, works and careers of the world’s most influential literary figures. Images also included.

Global Issues in Context is a new electronic resource that offers global perspectives on issues of international importance and current world events and topics in the news related to these issues. This resource ties together a variety of sources to present a rich analysis of issues social, political, military, economic, environmental, science related, health related, cultural and headlines in world hot spots.

Small Business Resource Center covers all major areas of starting and operating a business including financing, management, marketing, human resources, franchising, accounting and taxes. Startup and established businesses alike can find the answers they’re looking for from an easy-to-use interface that includes a “How To” menu that tackles the most-frequently asked new business questions.

All of these trials end June 5, 2009.

Take a look, and tell Larry or Emily what you think!

Introduction

PRINT IS DEAD is primarily for Drexel University Libraries staff and is designed to keep readers abreast of developments, setbacks, and changes to the Drexel Libraries Electronic resources, and also to keep track of news in the field.

spenglerPrint is, of course, not at all dead.  “Print is dead” is a quote by Dr. Egon Spengler from the 1984 film Ghostbusters. Dr. Spengler (played by Harold Ramis) says this line in response to a question from the Ghostbusters’ office secretary about whether Dr. Spengler likes to read books.  Spengler then reveals that his hobby is collecting “spores, molds, and fungus,” thereby revealing that his seemingly controversial statement about “print” was simply an acknowledgement that books are not living creatures.

If you have information you’d like to share on this site, or would like to correct or remove any information here, please contact the Electronic Resources team:
