Goodwin Fall Welcome Back Newsletter Article

For anyone who missed receiving a copy of their Goodwin College student newsletter I will republish the introductory article I contributed about Library services of interest here.

==================
This is a note from the Drexel Libraries Goodwin College Liaison, Tim Siftar.

What’s new at Drexel’s Library these days? New students may be unaware of the host of great resources and friendly help available to students through the Library. Aside from on-site services such as loaner laptops, storage lockers and private study rooms, some surprising resources can be found on the newly revised Library website. …

For those ready get beyond Google, the adventure starts at www.library.drexel.edu. Some of the new orientation features include the “Freshman Writers Toolbox” covering the few basic databases all freshman learn about in their first semester at Drexel. On the lighter side is the “E-coffeetable” with links into a selection of leisure-reading magazines such as People, the Sports Illustrated and Consumer Reports.

Altogether, the many databases subscribed to by the Library contain full-text of articles from over 17,000 scholarly journal and popular magazine titles! And thanks to recent technical advances in linking article-level details between our many databases, finding full-text from a citation has gotten easier using the “SFX” links offered by most databases– be sure to try them! Surprisingly enough, it’s not just magazines – but books as well going electronic these days. The Library’s main book catalog shows what is on our physical shelves – as well as tens of thousands of “e-books” available full-text, right in your web-browser!

For starting on assignments, see the front page link for Research Guides by Subject, that feature the recommended starting points for research on topics as specialized as Sports Management,
Civil Engineering, or Hospitality. There is even a set of Career-related guides maintained in collaboration with the Steinbright Career Development Center on topics such as resume writing and career planning.

The research guides are written by the Subject Specialist Librarians, who are available to assist you for each area of study here at Drexel. Look for their contact information and photo on every research guide webpage.

The Librarian for the Goodwin College is Tim Siftar who works with the other specialists to help answer subject-specific questions from the many disciplines found within Goodwin. He can be reached at siftar@drexel.edu or 215-895-2762. Check out his website for his favorite links and a regularly updated blog for Goodwin students.

Drexel’s Hagerty Library at 33rd & Market Streets is open daily from 7:30 AM until 2am, with a Librarian available for walk-in consultations until 10pm weeknights. Saturday hours are 10am-10pm and noon to midnight on Sunday’s. Be sure to visit – either in person or online. The Library is one of your keys to success here at Drexel!

Addendum: Do you use instant messaging? So do your librarians! Find details on our “Ask a Question” page.
