CINAHL to RefWorks Export Glitch

The problem encountered last week when exporting citations from CINAHL to RefWorks has been resolved.

However, it is always useful to know how to export citations from any database into RefWorks.  The instructions below apply specifically to the CINAHL database; when using other databases that don’t provide a direct export function, look for an option that allows you to save citations to a file (preferably a text file).  Then, using the RefWorks Import function, look for the appropriate import filter for that vendor and database.

  1. From the CINAHL folder containing the citations you want to save, click the Export icon.
  2. Under “Save Citations to a file formatted for” select “Generic bibliographic management software”
  3. Click “Save”
  4. From the display screen, use the File-Save As function of your browser to save the page as a .txt file.
  5. Open your RefWorks Account
  6. Under References, select Import
  7. For the Import Filter/Data Source, select “EBSCOhost”
  8. For the Database, select CINAHL
  9. Under “Import Data from the following Text File” browse to the text file you saved (above), then click IMPORT.

If you have any difficulties with this process, please contact the reference desk at 215-762-7184.

First Consult subscription dropped

The Libraries have canceled our subscription to First Consult, after determining that the level of usage did not justify the expense. We will, of course, continue to subscribe to MD Consult, which continues to be a very popular information source.

As substitutes for those seeking at-hand clinical information, we recommend Dynamed — watch for an announcement later this week about PDA/cell-phone access to Dynamed! We’re also arranging a trial subscription to Epocrates; watch for more news about this in coming weeks.

Cochrane Library: Unlimited Access now available via Wiley InterScience

The Health Sciences Libraries have chosen to subscribe to the Cochrane Library via Wiley InterScience to address access issues that have occured with our current subscription via OVID; our Wiley subscription will have no limit on simultaneous uses.

Currently, you’ll find the Wiley version of the Cochrane Library available through our lists of database (both the Medicine/Biomedical Sciences list, and the alphabetical list).  Watch for it as an addition to our homepage QuickLinks in coming weeks for fast, convenient access to the valuable evidence-based practice resource. Please note that the Cochrane Databases will be be removed from the list of databases available in OVID at the end of this month.

The Cochrane Library is a collection of databases that contain high-quality, independent evidence to inform healthcare decision-making. Cochrane reviews represent the highest level of evidence on which to base clinical treatment decisions.  The Cochrane Library also includes the Central Register of Controlled Trials, the Cochrane Methodology Register, Technology Assessments, and Economic Evaluations.  Each section can be searched by keywords or MeSH (medical subject headings); the Reviews can also be browsed by topic, by review group or alphabetically.   PDFs are provided for printing.

Reprise: CINAHL now available only through EBSCO

In early July, the Libraries announced that the CINAHL database would now be available only on the EBSCOHost platform. Due to new contractual agreements between CINAHL and EBSCO, CINAHL is no longer available through OVID.  All links on the Library website have been changed to reflect this.

While the EBSCOHost platform differs in some functionality, it does offer parallels to many of the popular OVID features:

Mapping to Subject Headings -> Suggest Subject Headings
The Advanced Search mode of EBSCO includes, by default, a function to map key words to CINAHL subject headings. The Subject Heading display includes Explode functions (i.e., include narrower subject headings in search) and subheadings.

Combining Searches – > On displaying the “Search History”, one can combine search terms to construct more complex search strategies.

Limits -> Refine Results
Search Options or Refine Results offers the full spectrum of limits: Peer Review, Research, Nursing journals only, etc.

Results Manager/Saved Searches -> “My Folder/My EBSCOHost”
Citations selected from a search are stored in the active Folder.  By creating a personal account (My EBSCOHost) stored citations and search strategies can be saved across sessions.  A folder sharing option offers the possibility of sharing search strategies and results between instructors and students or among the members of class.

Instructors who would like assistance in adapting CINAHL search assignments to the EBSCO platform should contact Gary Childs or Kathleen Turner in the Hahnemann Library.

EBSCO2.0: a new view of CINAHL

On July 16th, EBSCO released an updated version of its databases. CINAHL has been given a fresh, new look and incorporates some new features that Ovid’s CINAHL did not have.

Suggest Terms Search Box: Checking this box allows you to see the subject headings that best describe your search term. This is similar to the Map Term to Subject Heading box in OVID MEDLINE.

Cited References Tab: Type in an author’s name or a citation and see how  times the article has been cited in CINAHL.

New Ways to Limit Your Search:  Exclude MEDLINE Records, Inpatient, and Outpatient.

Creating Folders in CINAHL: By setting up a personal account, you can save your searches and create folders. You can also share your folders with others.

Need Help? Please call the Hahnemann Library Reference Desk at 215-762-3037.

CINAHL: Switched from OVID to EBSCO Interface

logoEHOST.gifThe Drexel University Libraries have switched its access for the CINAHL database (Cumulative Index for Nursing and Allied Health Literature) from the OVID interface to EBSCO.

Please accept our apologies for the abruptness of the switch; we had expected access to CINAHL through OVID to persist for a few more months. The EBSCO interface will offer some advantages — our concurrent use limit is higher, so students are less likely to find themselves unable to access the database when a crucial assignment is due. Downloading of search results into RefWorks is also simpler with EBSCO than with the OVID interface.

We are quickly preparing tip sheets and tutorials to help you navigate this new version of CINAHL; watch for these to be announced here and, as always, don’t hesitate to contact the libraries if you need any assistance:

  • Queen Lane Library – 215-991-8740
