Get It! from the Library!

The Libraries’ transition from SFX to Get It! is almost complete. You should be seeing the eye-catching Get It! button in all database search result. Get It! will lead from your search results to the Drexel-subscribed options for getting the full text of an article online; if the article isn’t available online, Get It! will lead to the libraries’ catalog to check for print holdings, or to our Interlibrary Loan system. Please note that when using PubMed, the link from the library website will identify you as Drexel-affiliated so that you’ll see the Get It! links with your search results.

A very useful feature of Get It! is the Citation Linker — now included in the Quick Links on the Health Sciences Libraries homepage.  Use the Citation Linker to find the fulltext when you have a citation in-hand, from the reference list of another article, from a colleague, or from a previous search.

The last stage of the transition to Get It!, expected to be completed next week, will be to update all library catalog records for electronic journals to utilize the Get It! linking.  Until this is completed, e-journal records in the catalog will divert to the Electronic Journal Locator, where you can browse alphabetically or by subject areas for a journal available online.

On Trial: Science Translational Medicine

The Drexel Libraries have a trial subscription to the journal Science Translational Medicine; the trial will continue until August 25th.  Science, the publishers of the journals, describe the mission as “To promote human health by providing a forum for communication and cross-fertilization among basic, translational, and clinical research practitioners and trainees from all relevant established and emerging disciplines.”

You can find the journal at http://www.library.drexel.edu/cgi-bin/r.cgi?url=http://stm.sciencemag.org/, or on our list of current trials — http://www.library.drexel.edu/databases/trial.  Please send your feedback to Lenore Hardy,  Director of Health Sciences Libraries at hardy@drexel.edu.

The trial runs through August 25, 2010.

Here is a link -  http://www.library.drexel.edu/cgi-bin/r.cgi?url=http://stm.sciencemag.org/ – which can also be found by searching this title in the library online catalog.

Please direct feedback on this journal to Lenore Hardy, Director of Health Sciences Libraries (hardy@drexel.edu)

OVID PDF issues

Sigh.

We are sorry to say that the difficulties with retrieving journal article PDFs from OVID when off-campus seem to be continuing. We’ve received reports from patrons that this problem usually occurs when using an SFX link to an article in an OVID journal.

First, we are working on the problem — we’re pursuing every lead we can to find a solution.

But in the meantime, we’d like to offer a workaround solution:

  1. Make a note of the citation for the article — journal title, volume, issue and page numbers.
  2. Open a new browser window to the Health Sciences Libraries homepage (http://www.library.drexel.edu/healthsciences) and use the QuickLink to open up OVID MEDLINE.
  3. From the Database Selection screen, choose “Browse all Journals”.
  4. In the “Filter by Title” box on the left, use the alphabet index to reach the journal title.
  5. Select the journal title, then use the Journal Issue list on the left to navigate to the correct volume and issue — from the table of contents you should be able to find the article you need and open the article PDF.

An alternative is to call or email us — or use our reference chat service. We will be very happy to retrieve the article for you and email the PDF as quickly as we can.

Again, our apologies for the inconvenience this causes; please don’t hesitate to contact us if you need assistance.

SFX: OVID and ScienceDirect connection problems

We have been experiencing some difficulties connecting to journals in the OVID and ScienceDirect (Elsevier) collections via the SFX linking system.  The OVID problem seems to occur only when connecting from off-campus while the ScienceDirect problem can occur regardless of location.

In both cases, it is still possible to obtain the desired journal article.

For ScienceDirect journals: ScienceDirect seems to be having trouble interpreting the article-level information from SFX.  Return to the SFX window, and remove the year, volume, issue and page number information from the boxes, then click on the red GO button again.  ScienceDirect will open to the entry point for the journal title; it will be necessary to select the volume and issue needed from the listing on the left, then find the required article in the table of contents.

Remove text from boxes.

For OVID Journals: Search in the library catalog for the required journal title; click the provided link to connect to OVID, then select the volume and issue needed from the display, and find the required article in the table of contents.

We are working to resolve both of these problems; please don’t hesitate to contact us if you need assistance.

Scientific Publishing Merger

In astonishing news, the Scholarly Kitchen, a blog focused on the world of scholarly publishing, announced today that news had been leaked regarding a forthcoming merger of scientific publishing giants, Springer, Elsevier and Wiley-Blackwell.

“Continuing the trend of consolidation, the heads of the largest STM publishers will form a single, publicly-held company.  While details are still being worked out, the name of the publisher will be be Springer-Elsevier-Wiley-Blackwell, or SPEW for short.

The merger, if confirmed by the U. S.  Department of Justice and the European Commission’s Competition Directorate, will represent the largest publisher merger in history, representing 63% of all scientific journals and consuming 99% of library budgets.”

The "Damaged" PDF Problem

Many of our library patrons have brought to our attention a sporadic problem they have encountered when attempting to open journal articles within OVID and other journal collections.  An article will appear to be available, but the user will receive a message that the file is “damaged” and cannot be opened.

Our systems staff are working on putting a permanent solution in place.  In the meantime, however, we ask that anyone who encounters this problem contact us, either via email at hslib@drexel.edu, or phone — 215-762-7184 so that we can assist you in obtaining the journal article.

Thank you for your patience while we work on a solution to this problem.

Nature Chemical Biology: Online Enhancements

Nature Chemical Biology, available through the Libraries’ e-journal collections, has added some very useful new features and enhancements.

  • Enhanced online functionality: Nature Chemical Biology has already integrated several online resources to enable readers to better access and use chemical information in published papers. Readers will now see further enhancements to the online chemistry functionality of Nature Chemical Biology papers, including:
    • two-dimensional structure and reference pop-ups on the article page
    • a richer database of information on each compound
    • enhanced rendering of three-dimensional compound structures
    • more file formats for chemical information
  • More research highlights: On the basis of positive feedback from our readers, we are expanding our monthly research highlights section, which will provide more space to highlight a wider range of chemical biology papers each month.
  • Primers: Starting this year, we will be publishing a series of peer-reviewed “Primers”, which are one-page summaries of chemical or biological topics designed to jump-start your user’s ability to comprehend research in a particular area. Available as a tear-out sheet in print issues and also as a PDF download, these primers can be posted on bulletin boards or used as bookmarks for easy reference. The first primer, which will feature green fluorescent protein, will be published in the February issue.
