Are you using EndNote Web?

Recent upgrades have added some features to EndNote Web that –  frankly — are awesome!

  • “GetIt” buttons! — when you’re on-campus or using Drexel’s VPN service,  citations stored in your EndNote Web account will appear with those wonderful GetIt buttons that lead to our subscribed e-journal collections, AND directly to our ILLiad Interlibrary Loan service for those obscure or hard-to-find articles.
  • Sharing! — collaboration is what it’s all about in the academic world, and EndNote Web gives you the ability to share groups of citations with colleagues, whether at Drexel or elsewhere. In accordance with copyright/licensing concerns, attached documents (yes, you can attach documents and files to EndNote Web citations!) won’t be available to those with whom you share citations, but they’ll also have resolver-links (through Drexel or their own institution) to find the full text for themselves.
  • Using Cite-While-You-Write — the Cite-While-You-Write plug-in that does all of that magical formatting for you while you write your papers can be configured to pull citations from either your desktop EndNote or your EndNote Web account. Switch back and forth using Preferences/Application in the EndNote tab in Word.

Two years access to EndNote Web is available when you install Drexel-licensed EndNote software; if you’ve set up an EndNote Web account with a version of EndNote earlier than the current X5 you can update it to include all the new features by opening EndNote, going to Edit>Preferences>EndNote Web and clicking the “Activate” button.

Reference Librarians are happy to help you navigate the complexities of EndNote and EndNote Web; just call our reference desk at 215-762-7184 or email us at hslib@drexel.edu.

EndNote X4 available (corrected)

EndNote X4 is now available for download from IRT’s software site https://software.drexel.edu/.

Unfortunately, it did not prove possible to pre-configured EndNote preferences in this version.

You can do this yourself easily, so that EndNote uses Drexel Libraries’ link resolver to find the full text of journal articles and attach the documents to your EndNote records. Illustrated instructions for setting EndNote preferences are available here:  http://www.library.drexel.edu/resources/guides/healthsciencesguides/?page_id=148#tutorials.

X4 offers many new features, including:

  • Import and create new records from PDF files. Whether you are importing a single file or a folder of PDF files, EndNote uses metadata and DOI information to create a new reference and attach the source PDF. Basic bibliography information will be added automatically for most journal articles, conference proceedings, conference papers and reports.
  • Search the contents of attached PDF files. You’ll find a new option on the field list to search PDF files separately, or in combination with the reference data.
  • Modify references easily in the new Quick Edit tab on the main library window. Use the tabs to preview formatted references, search your library and online resources, and now edit references-all without opening additional windows.
  • Create new groups by comparing, combining or suppressing existing groups. The new smart groups are updated dynamically as your library grows.
  • Transfer up to 10,000 references between the desktop and EndNote Web to share online groups with other EndNote users. Shared groups are now included when you Cite While You Write from EndNote Web.
  • Expand your library retrieval results by adding wildcards within search terms.
  • Edit references when comparing duplicates-copy/paste and save changes in the side-by-side view.

Cite While You Write enhancements include:

  • Add hyperlinks between in-text citations and the bibliography reference in Microsoft Word using any journal style.
  • Meet the complete APA 6th style requirements including specific handling of references with eight or more authors, hyphenated first names and DOI data.

Is your EndNote up-to-date?

The producers of EndNote bibliographic management software are very good at keeping current with changes in database structures and interfaces, and changes in publication styles.  These changes, however, are not necessarily integrated into the EndNote application. Visit EndNote’s Support & Services site (http://www.endnote.com/support/ensupport.asp) site to find updates.

Some  recent updates that may be of particular interest include:

  • APA 6th Edition Update (even if you installed EndNote since the release of APA 6th edition, you must download this update!)
  • Import Filters for EBSCO databases
  • Instructions for importing from Google Scholar

Also noted on the EndNote homepage is new information related to the NIH requirement that PMC (PubMed Central) reference numbers be included in references for grant proposals.
