The Libraries at Research Day 2007

e20.gifThe Drexel University Libraries were well-represented last week at the Office of Research's Ninth Annual Research Day, "A Presentation of Research, Innovation, Scholarship and Creativity". In the "Innovation In Education and Outreach" poster category, librarians Jay Bhatt, Peggy Dominy and Tim Siftar, and library assistant Joshua Roberts presented "Connecting with the Millenials", a graphic respresentation of the Libraries' use of new technologies to connect with students of the Millenial generation.

p63.gif
Peggy Dominy (Math and Sciences Librarian) and Jay Bhatt (Engineering Librarian) also presented a poster in the "Research in Physical Science and Engineering" category titled "Impact of interdisciplinary scientific research on science and engineering librarianship in academic institutions".

Students, staff and faculty stopped to visit the Libraries' table in the lobby, to meet library staff, learn about library resources, and enter the raffle for a Wii, Nintendo's revolutionary new game system.

2007: The Year of Euler

eulersmall.JPG
Yes, 300 years ago on April 15, Leonard Euler was born. Considered by many to be one of the greatest mathematicians if not the most prolific author of modern history. Celebrations are happening throughout the year world wide. Drexel's Math department will be hosting an event in the fall.

Check out these web sites:

http://www.euler-2007.ch/
http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/biography/Euler.html
http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Mathematicians/Euler.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonhard_Euler

Euler's contributions beyond mathematics span many scientific and engineering disciplines, such as astronomy (planetary orbits), physics (optics & sound), biology (population studies), engineering (hydraulics, gears, robotics) and more.

Hagerty Library currently has a display in honor of Euler's birth exhibiting some examples of his contributions and ways in which he has been honored by several countries on their money and stamps. Next time you're in the library, pause by the display cases near the library entrance to learn more about this amazing person.

For more on the fascinating world of mathematics, be sure to visit Math and Sciences Librarian Peggy Dominy's Drexelmath blog at http://www.library.drexel.edu/blogs/drexelmath/.

Times Select now Free to .edu Addresses

The New York Times has opened it's TimesSelect online service to anyone who registers with an email address from an educational institution (i.e., with a ".edu" address). TimesSelect offers content that isn’t available through the newspapers free site, such as Op-Ed and News Columnists, as well as access to archives since 1851 (up to 100 articles a month), customized e-mail news alerts, special multimedia features, and more.

Register for TimesSelect at http://www.nytimes.com/gst/regi.html.

While we hope the University community takes advantage of this offer from the New York Times, we will continue to offer the New York Times (Current) and New York Times (Historical) collections through ProQuest, to allow academic researchers to take advantage of the more extensive search tools they provide.

You'll find our options for reading or researching in the New York Times, as well as other local and national newspapers, on our Newspapers Online page (look for the Quick Link on the library homepage).
