Hagerty Goes 24/7

cardswipe.gifFor the first time, Hagerty Library will be open around the clock during exam week. The Library will open at 7:30 am on Wednesday, June 6th, and will remain open until 11:00 pm on Friday, June 15th (see Library Hours).

To ensure student safety, students entering the Library after 2:00 am will swipe their DragonCards at the card reader next to the doors to enter. Two University Public Safety Officers will be on duty inside the building.

The Library also plans some treats for late night studiers -- cookies and coffee will be offered at 10 each night, and the vending machines will be kept well-stocked. There will also be free screenings of classic (but campy!) movies beginning at midnight in Room L33 (the new Mary E. Hagerty Learning Lab on the lower level of the Library).

With funds set aside in next year's budget for Hagerty Library renovations, Library Director Jane Bryan hopes to add a cafe to the first floor, which will function as a 24/7 space with a separate entrance.

Roving Librarians!

Hagerty Library announces its "Ask Me!" program for research help. Temporary reference desks staffed by librarians will be appearing in the following locations:

  • Tuesday, May 29, 2007, 3 to 5 p.m. in Creese Student Center lobby (32nd and Chestnut Streets)
  • Wednesday, May 30, 2007, 3 to 5 p.m. in Starbucks Coffee at Pearlstein Learning Center (33rd and Market Streets)
All members of the Drexel community are encouraged to stop by these desks for help with research, citations, directions, and other questions.

For more information, contact Josh Roberts at jcr382@drexel.edu.

Drexel University’s W.W. Hagerty Library will dedicate a major collection of Holocaust-related books. The books, donated by Dr. Dan Gillis, are given in honor of Dr. Helen Segall and Professor Stanley Segall.

godin-sm.gif
Nesse Godin:
Eleven years old when World War II broke out, Nesse Godin, born and raised in Lithuania, survived a ghetto, concentration camp, four labor camps, and a death march. She has dedicated her adult life to teaching about the Holocaust and the consequences of hatred to both children and adults. She is Co-President of the Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Friends of Greater Washington, and she volunteers weekly at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum.

In her talk, Nesse Godin will describe the rich foundations that her Jewish family life before the war provided her, and her resolve after the war to speak out against the horrors of genocide, violence, and hate.

Free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Support for this event comes from the Louis and Bessie Stein Foundation, The Milton and Miriam Handler Foundation, and the Friends of Judaic Studies. For further information: Kathy.carll@drexel.edu, 215-895-6388, www. drexel.edu/judaicstudies.

To Wikipedia or Not to Wikipedia

wikipedia.jpgWhether to use Wikipedia or not use Wikipedia depends on what you need and how you are going to use the information you find.

If you need an authoritative scholarly resource for your research paper, Wikipedia is not your best choice. Wikipedia has limitations; its articles are written by anonymous authors, they can be edited by anyone, and the information is largely unreviewed, unregulated and, sometimes, inaccurate.

The University Libraries license authoritative general and specialized online encyclopedias for use by the Drexel community, including Britannica Online (academic edition), AccessScience (McGraw-Hill’s Encyclopedia of Science & Technology Online), Encyclopedia of Astronomy and Astrophysics, POLYMERSnetBASE, Ullmann’s Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, Corsini Encyclopedia of Psychology and Behavioral Science, Grove Dictionary of Art and the Wiley Encyclopedia of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. These sources do provide scholarly, authoritative and reliable information. They are all free to Drexel students, faculty, and staff and are not available freely on the Internet.

Likewise, scholarly research articles can be found using electronic databases available from the library's web site. Several databases such as Expanded Academic, Proquest Research Library, and Ei Compendex/INSPEC offer access to peer reviewed journal articles. Major subject based electronic databases are available from: http://www.library.drexel.edu/resources/databasesbysubject.html.

Use the library’s guide, 'Is this a Scholarly publication?,' at http://www.library.drexel.edu/resources/tutorials/scholpubs.html to determine whether the article you found fits the definition of a scholarly publication or not.

On the other hand, Wikipedia can often provide a good starting point. In addition to general background information and context, it can quickly provide appropriate keywords that you can use while searching for scholarly information through databases available from the library's web site.

The library staff is happy to answer questions about finding the best possible source. Please contact the library staff or email or IM your questions by going to:

Tracy Hull, Head of Information Services, leaves for Texas

thull.gifTracy Hull, Head of Hagerty’s Information Services Department, is moving to Texas to begin her new position as Associate Dean of the Library at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. As Associate Dean Tracy will be responsible for the operations of the library’s public and technical services units, including reference, interlibrary loan, government documents, special collections, cataloging, acquisitions, and collection development. The Music Library will also report to her. Though we are very sorry to say goodbye to Tracy, we recognize that this is a very special opportunity.

During her four years at Drexel, Tracy has built an extremely effective team in Information Services. Her staff are commited to service, hard working, open to new technology, and ready to experiment with new services. More than one of them commented that Tracy had been just the kind of supportive and centered leader they needed; her calm demeanor and wise judgment helped them develop and evaluate projects with an open and trusting supervisor. She will be sorely missed.

Emily Missner Devaney will be filling in as Interim Head of Information Services; she can be reached at 215-895-6164 or edm25@drexel.edu.

We wish Tracy the very best. TCU is extremely fortunate to gaining such an extraordinary professional colleague.
Jane Bryan
