Candy Happy Hour

Ah, Fall…how sweet it is.

Hagerty’s welcoming you back with candy. Meet us in the café between 5 and 6 today, check out the new interior design and food options, catch up with the library, and most important: eat candy.

See you there.

Searching the Stacks?

Starting Monday August 24th, part of Hagerty’s 2nd floor stacks will be closed for renovation. Need a book between HG185 and JN1? Let someone at the Circulation Desk know and they’ll get it for you.

Not sure what your book’s call number is? Look it up in the catalog. You’ll see a note that says: “Area under renovation–request this item at the Circulation Desk.” If you don’t see this note, or if your book is outside the range between C and JX, feel free to browse yourself.

Eating at Hagerty

As you may know, Hagerty Library has recently received many comments about its policy against meals in the building. These comments include complaints that food policy reflects disrespect and distrust toward students and ignorance of high tuition costs.

If you are angry about being asked to leave your food at the door, please take a breath, count to ten, and consider these facts:

  • When the café reopens in the fall, full meals will be allowed 24/7.
  • If you’ve ever spoken with a library staff member, you know that they are respectful, helpful people who want to help you get the most from your education.
  • Tuition revenue that goes to the library is used to fulfill its education and research mission—not to maintain a dining area.
  • The food policy has been in place since November 2008, after a loosening of the policy resulted in mice, cockroaches, litter, and filth.
  • Prior to the new policy in November, we received frequent student complaints about the smells, garbage, and noise associated with food in a place that is intended to be a clean and quiet study area.
  • There are many places nearby on campus that welcome you and your meals.

Even with the food policy in place, library staff members have arrived in the morning to find the previous night’s food garbage awaiting them. This garbage includes:

  • Mountains of orange peels piled next to computers
  • Pizza boxes on tables with mice underneath
  • Entire bowls of soup spilled on the floor and left to seep into the carpet
  • Much more

Please join us in keeping the library clean and safe. This is the only way we can continue to provide the resources and services you need for your Drexel career.

Food Enforcement

If you’ve walked into Hagerty Library recently, you’ve noticed that Bookmark Cafe is closed for renovations until the end of the summer.

“Where do I eat my meal?” you may ask. The answer is “outside of the library.” In order to keep the building clean, pest free, and accessible for all of our patrons, we must continue to enforce our food policy while the cafe is closed. This means that you can bring in small snacks and drinks in covered containers but not hoagies, french fries, pizza, egg sandwiches, or anything that could be construed as a meal.

This policy applies to all areas of Hagerty Library, *including classrooms.*

Starting on Monday, July 6th, public safety staff at the entry gates to the library will help us enforce our food policy by asking patrons to leave their meals at the door.  Please pitch in and help keep Hagerty clean and pest free by respecting the rules–and those who enforce them.

Here are some on-campus common areas where your meals are welcome with open arms:

Pearlstein Learning Center (Lounge at Starbucks)
Matheson Hall (basement study area)
Korman Hall (lobby)
Nestbit Hall (lobby)
Bossone Research Center (past the desk and to the left as you enter)
Rush Building (courtyard and lobby)
Handchumacher Dining Center
Creese Student Center (lobby)
LeBow Engineering Center (lobby)

New furniture for summer term

Welcome back! We’re so glad to have you back for summer term. You may have noticed we made some changes while you were away. First, there are a lot more tables and chairs on the first floor of Hagerty, and second, the Bookmark Cafe is now closed.

Bookmark Cafe has closed for a summer of renovations. Meanwhile, its furniture has moved into the main part of Hagerty’s first floor, making the library an even better place for studying comfortably, or just curling up with a leisure book in our breezy (but not too cold) air conditioning.

And stay tuned; this fall the cafe will reopen with updated decor and study-friendly fare.
