Microsoft Surface in Hagerty
The Office of the Provost and the Dean of Libraries invite students, faculty and staff to experience new and exciting technology available for a limited time in Hagerty Library. Microsoft Surface offers different ways to interact with information and software through a multi-user, touch-sensitive surface table.
Microsoft will lend Drexel a surface from Monday, May 17 – Friday, May 21, 2010. Those interested can stop by the first floor of Hagerty Library to experience this immersive technology. Additionally, on Monday, May 17 between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, Microsoft representatives will offer brief demonstrations each hour, and be available for discussion of the device’s capabilities.
The Surface is also a development platform for which applications need to be designed, offering a potential “sandbox” to experiment and explore new approaches to fostering the discovery and use of information. The Surface allows people, whether individually or several at the same time, to interact with software. It goes beyond the excitement of a traditional touch screen by recognizing multiple points of contact with the screen, whether human touch or physical objects. Some applications have expanded on the ability to transfer data from the table to other devices such as cell phones, readers, digital cameras, or credit cards.
There are numerous examples of its use, especially in the hospitality industry that you can find through the web. See for yourself!
