New in ScienceDirect

ScienceDirect, Elsevier's ejournal search platform, has added some new features and enhancements:

scidirect.gifWant to see reference information without scrolling to the foot of an article? It is now possible to view reference information within the body of a paper when your cursor moves over a reference marker.

Want to quickly evaluate articles before reading them? You’ll find easy access to important article components including the abstract, figures/tables and references on the search results, table of contents and article pages.

You’ve evaluated and read the article, what now? You can take further action quickly and easily. A new article toolbox brings together all of the article-related functionality including "Cited By", "E-mail Article" and more, into one easy-to-find location.

Scifinder Scholar: New Web Version

scfinder.gifWe're pleased to announce a new web interface for Scifinder Scholar, the search interface for access to Chemical Abstracts online. The web interface can be used without downloading and installing client software, and does not require use of the VPN.

While all search features are available in the web interface our Math Sciences Librarian, Peggy Dominy, has identified some functions -- primarily used by those doing bibliometric analysis -- for which the downloadable interface may be preferred, therefore we will continue to make this version available as well.

Chemical Abstracts covers the published scientific research in chemistry, and offers searching by author name, research topic, substance identifier, chemical structure, or chemical reaction. Now includes the Substructure Module (SSM). The limit of 4 simlutaneous users will continue to apply regardless of which interface is in use.

Look for both versions of Scifinder Scholar in our lists of databases.

Thinking Green

logo_green.gifRecycling? Biofuels? Green buildings? Environmentally-sensitive product packaging? A recent addition to our collection of databases, EbscoHost's GreenFILE, is a good place to find information on any of these topics:

GreenFILE offers well-researched but accessible information covering all aspects of human impact on the environment. Its collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles include content on the environmental effects of individuals, corporations and local/national governments, and what can be done on each level to minimize negative impact. Topics covered include global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. GreenFILE is multidisciplinary by nature and draws on the connections between the environment and a variety of disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology.

Need more? You'll find a lot of useful suggestions on Science Librarian Peggy Dominy's Research Guide for Environmental Science.

Worthy of a [Foot]note

apastyle.gifWe're pleased to announce the addition of the APA Style Guide to Electronic Reference to our electronic collections:

Expanded and updated from the Electronic Resources section of the Fifth Edition of the Publication Manual, this comprehensive yet succinct style guide in PDF format offers up-to-date information on formatting electronic references in APA style. With more than 40 example references, the APA Style Guide to Electronic References outlines for students and writers the key elements to include in references to electronic sources, with numerous examples.

Among the new examples are dissertations and theses; bibliographies; curriculum and course material; reference materials, including Wiki; gray literature, such as conference hearings, presentation slides, and policy briefs; general interest media and alternative presses such as audio podcasts; and online communities, such as Weblog posts and video Weblog posts. Students and writers will find this guide indispensable as well as convenient to download and use when citing electronic references.

This brief guide, in useful pdf format, is available to students and other members of the Drexel community (yes, you may print a copy for yourself) -- just search "APA style" in the Library Catalog.

Community of Scholars: Trial access now live

The Libraries are excited to announce that trial access to the CSA’s newly integrated Community of Scholars products is now live, and will continue until February 22nd. Please send feedback on these to Jane Bryan at jgb34@drexel.edu.

scholar.jpgCOS Funding Opportunities
A compiled database of available opportunities for grants, fellowships, prizes and other type of funding. It is an extensive database with opportunities for recipients anywhere in the world, working in any discipline. Opportunity sponsors come from the public and private sector, including local, state and national governments, foundations and societies, and corporations.

COS Papers Invited
The database consists of detailed information and deadlines about calls for papers for forthcoming conferences and special issues of scholarly journals. These calls for papers are issued by professional bodies, journal editors and other conference organizers in all disciplines and from all over the world. Thus, the database serves as an alerting service for researchers, scholars and students that are seeking opportunities to present and publish their research. Approximately 10,000 conferences are listed each year along with 1,200-1,500 special issues.

COS Scholar Universe
Provides authoritative information about more than 1 million scholars and organizations around the world, together with verified affiliation and publication information. The database comprises international faculty at 4-year universities and their departments. Also searchable from within any of Drexel's CSA databases. A complement to COS Expertise.

From the libraries’ funding databases page (http://www.library.drexel.edu/resources/dbsubjects/funding.html) choose any of the three COS trials (Funding Opportunities, Papers Invited, Scholar Universe). All will lead you to the basic search page and your results will include tabs for available funding, scholars, calls for papers, as well as published articles, web sites, conference papers, books. (Note: this bibliography does not necessarily include all publications by a scholar or on a topic.)

More E-Journal Backfiles, Indexes added to Library Online Collections

As we continue to replace the print bound journal and index collections at Hagerty with available electronic journal coverage, we have purchased more electronic content and indexes available to the entire University community. We now own the electronic backfiles to 549 journals not previously accessible online to Drexel Libraries. These titles are contained within several Springer Online Archive packages and the American Institute of Physics Archive that have been purchased with funds provided by the Provost for replacing our print journals. Fifty-eight of these titles replace Hagerty’s bound print holdings; the rest are additions to our collection.

All of these titles are now available in the catalog and electronic journals list. Please see the following pages for the individual journal titles included in each collection:

Additionally, we have purchased several retrospective abstracting and indexing databases to replace the print indexes currently shelved on the third floor of Hagerty Library. We now have available the following Wilson retrospective databases:Purchase of these databases was made possible by funding from the Provost, with additional funding for Library Literature and Information Science Retrospective made possible by the iSchool. Access to these databases is now available through the Databases lists and in the Library Catalog.

E-Journal Coverage Expands with Backfiles

Hagerty Library is very pleased to announce the addition of major electronic journal backfiles, which significantly expand the retrospective coverage of our online journal collection. The Wiley Interscience and Elsevier backfiles collections include 575 journals, primarily in the sciences, computer and engineering disciplines, with coverage of some titles extending back as far as the 1930's. While 145 of these titles replace titles currently in our print journal holdings, the remaining 430 titles are new to our collections.

Use studies and surveys have shown that our faculty and students, particularly those in the science and technical fields, have a strong preference for journals in electronic format. The purchase of these backfile collections with special funds provided by the Provost will allow us to remove underutilized print volumes to clear space on the third floor of Hagerty Library for use by the College of Law Library.

A list of the journal titles and coverage provided in the Wiley and Elsevier backfiles is available at http://www.library.drexel.edu/resources/backfiles-oct2007.html. The titles have already been added to the library catalog and electronic journal lists. Watch for announcements of additional titles as we continue to enhance the electronic collections.

Dude, Where's My Textbook?

textbooks.jpg"Does the library have the assigned textbook for my class?"

Maybe. At Hagerty Library, we don't buy the required textbook for every course (if we did, we'd have a library full of out-of-date textbooks and nothing else). We will have one or more copies of required readings for a course on Reserve, if the instructor has requested that we do so.

You can find books or course readings on Reserve by the course number (for example, MATH101), or by the instructors name. At Hagerty Library, most Reserve books can be checked out for 2 hours at a time to be used only in the Library; this ensures that everyone in a class has an equal chance to use the books.

You may occasionally find a required book (or an older but still useful edition of it) in the general library collection. You can check by searching the Library Catalog for the title or author's name.

Psssst -- if there isn't anything on reserve for your class, let your instructor know how useful it would be to his or her students!

At Hagerty, the machine is located on the first floor near the reference-area printer; at Hahnemann, you'll find it in the 24-hour study room.
  • Six new group study rooms have been created at Hahnemann; they can be used for individual quiet study when they aren't signed out to a group.
  • IM Reference service is now offered at Hahnemann Library as well as Hagerty. For screennames, times, etc.
  • Construction is underway at Hagerty Library to create a 24-hour Study Room on the south side of the 1st floor (previously the reserve/periodicals reading room). Triangle Highlights Second Life Drexel Island

Drex_lib_leaves.gifThe July 27th issue of The Triangle highlights Drexel's virtual Second Life campus, Drexel Island, initiated by the College of Arts and Sciences Jean-Claude Bradley, and Hagerty Library's Tim Siftar (aka Jack LaPointe in SL). The library, occupying the western end of Drexel Island (okay, we're the Dragon's Tail!), is experimenting with ways to offer services to the University community in Second Life -- reference help, virtual learning experiences, access to research tools, perhaps even virtual book groups. Library staff, travelling as their Second Life avatars, have visited online conferences and exhibits in Science Commons, Info Island and other Second Life locations.

Second Life will soon be available on all desktop computers in Hagerty Library, providing opportunities for students and other library visitors to explore Drexel Island.

Noticed Anything New Lately?

laptoplenovo.gifSanta made an out-of-season visit to Hagerty Library's systems department this month, bringing lots of new techno-goodies!

Look for:

  • Twenty new Lenovo R60 Laptops!
  • New Omega Ps150 Touchscreens to replace the Dragonprint Stations at the printers in L14 and the Reference Area!
  • New computers for the 1st floor Reference Area and L13! Be aware that these computers do not have "floppy" disk drives which have become increasingly prone to breakage and file loss -- we recommend the use of USB "Flash" Drives or Dunx1 space for file storage.
  • Two 42" LCD TV's, with DVD players! One has been placed in Study Room 123.
  • Four new Canon Scanners, replacing the two scanners previously available in room L14!

To Wikipedia or Not to Wikipedia

wikipedia.jpgWhether to use Wikipedia or not use Wikipedia depends on what you need and how you are going to use the information you find.

If you need an authoritative scholarly resource for your research paper, Wikipedia is not your best choice. Wikipedia has limitations; its articles are written by anonymous authors, they can be edited by anyone, and the information is largely unreviewed, unregulated and, sometimes, inaccurate.

The University Libraries license authoritative general and specialized online encyclopedias for use by the Drexel community, including Britannica Online (academic edition), AccessScience (McGraw-Hill’s Encyclopedia of Science & Technology Online), Encyclopedia of Astronomy and Astrophysics, POLYMERSnetBASE, Ullmann’s Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, Corsini Encyclopedia of Psychology and Behavioral Science, Grove Dictionary of Art and the Wiley Encyclopedia of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. These sources do provide scholarly, authoritative and reliable information. They are all free to Drexel students, faculty, and staff and are not available freely on the Internet.

Likewise, scholarly research articles can be found using electronic databases available from the library's web site. Several databases such as Expanded Academic, Proquest Research Library, and Ei Compendex/INSPEC offer access to peer reviewed journal articles. Major subject based electronic databases are available from: http://www.library.drexel.edu/resources/databasesbysubject.html.

Use the library’s guide, 'Is this a Scholarly publication?,' at http://www.library.drexel.edu/resources/tutorials/scholpubs.html to determine whether the article you found fits the definition of a scholarly publication or not.

On the other hand, Wikipedia can often provide a good starting point. In addition to general background information and context, it can quickly provide appropriate keywords that you can use while searching for scholarly information through databases available from the library's web site.

The library staff is happy to answer questions about finding the best possible source. Please contact the library staff or email or IM your questions by going to:
http://www.library.drexel.edu/about/askaquestion.html
