Construction Update: Hagerty Library

hard_hat.jpgOn Friday, May 16th, there will be core drilling on the 3rd floor -- it will be noisy. We recommend use of the lower level if you're seeking quiet study space. As always, ear plugs are available at the circulation desk.

UPDATE: On Monday, May 19th, the scaffolding will come down -- hurray for atrium light on the 1st floor!

On Monday, May 19th, the air handlers will be turned off temporarily while work is completed on the roof. Temperatures are expected to remain cool over the weekend and on Monday, so we do not anticipate uncomfortable conditions in the library.

We thank all of our students an other library patrons for their continued patience as our renovations continue.

Welcome Back! What's New?

Well, we have a lot to tell you about!

Did you notice our new Website?
We've done a visual refresh for a new, more contemporary look -- you'll still find all your old favorites, along with some new features, including highlights of our library blogs, and quick access to our IM/Chat reference service. Let us know what you think!

patio.gifOur New Patio!

Our new outdoor tables are lonely right now, but they're looking forward to the first warm, sunny spring days when they know they'll be the hottest seats on campus! Think about it: warm sun, cool drink, hot wireless -- or maybe even a good book to read!

adaptivetech.gifAdaptive Technologies Room Reopened

Hagerty and Hahnemann Libraries have equipment and software available to assist students with visual and other disabilities. In Hagerty Library, Assistive Technology equipment is now located in Room 122 on the first floor of the library; the key to this room can be requested at the Circulation Desk. In the Hahnemann Library, equipment is available in both the 1st floor computer lab, and the 2nd floor 24-hour room.

Please see Library Services to Patrons with Disabilities for more information.

And watch for: more study room spaces opening soon!

If you were away for the Winter Term, here's some of the news we blogged while you were gone:

Noise Alert!

maxlite.gifConstruction crews working on the 3rd floor of Hagerty Library have begun dismantling the existing duct work. Sawing through the metal ducts is going to be very noisy; this work is expected to continue until about 2:00 pm each day.

We apologize for this inconvenience -- this is an unavoidable part of the renovation process, but should be completed well before the beginning of the exam period. As always, disposable ear plugs are available at the Circulation Desk to help minimize the distraction.

Compact Shelving Area now Open

compactshelving.gifThe new compact shelving area in Hagerty Library's lower level, is now open for browsing. The library materials moved to this area include Juvenile and Teen books, national bibliographies (i.e, The National Union Catalog, Historical Records Survey, Monthly Catalog of United States Documents, etc.), oversized books, and all print journals remaining in Hagerty Library.

Compact shelving allows us to maximize study space in the library by condensing print collections in to a smaller area; the compact shelving installed in this one small section of the lower level is the equivalent of nearly a full mile of shelving. Shift the rows of shelves to create an aisle where needed by turning the large handles on the ends of each section of shelving; the shelves move very easily on tracks set in to the floor.

Library staff will be happy to assist you if you need help finding items in this area.

Renovation Update: What are they Building Now?

scaffold.gifScaffolding is being erected today beneath the large atrium in Hagerty Library, in order to allow work on the skylight and the heating and ventilating systems as part of the third floor renovations. Once construction of the scaffolding is completed, traffic paths from the front desk and in front of the computer area will reopen. The scaffolding is expected to remain in place for several months.

refdesk.gifBecause of the scaffolding construction, the Reference Desk was moved yesterday, towards the south end of the Library, and rotated to be perpendicular to the Circulation Desk.

A new half-height wall has been constructed in the lower-level study area, with electrical receptacles installed along both sides. The tables arranged along this wall now provide group study space with convenient laptop plug-in.

newtables2.gifIn addition, L101 -- the glassed in room at the foot of the stairs -- has now been designated a quiet study space. Carrels from the third floor have been moved to this area. Students are expected to work quietly in this space; no cell phone rings or conversations, no music audible to others. Your fellow students will appreciate your courtesy!

Please Pardon the Noise!

maxlite.gifAs renovations proceed, some construction-related noise will be unavoidable. Whenever possible, construction work is being scheduled during morning hours to minimize disturbance during prime study hours. Disposable ear plugs are available at the Circulation Desk to help minimize the distraction.

Bookmark Café Now Open Overnight, Coffee/Snack Bar Opens . . .

DSC00054.gifCoffee, snacks, beverages, sandwiches, salads and more!

coffee.gifThe Coffee/Snack bar in Hagerty Library's Bookmark Café is now open for business. Operated by Sodexho, the café will be open 11 am to 9 pm Monday through Friday, and 4 to 9 pm on Sundays. "Turbo oven" facilities allow fast heating of pizza slices and other tummy-warming goodies.

Vending machines will be available to meet snacking needs when the Café snack bar is closed.

All Night Hours also Begin

cardswipenew.gifAlso beginning tonight, the Bookmark Café will remain open all night, every night, providing 24/7 study space throughout the term. After the Library closes (2:00 am Sunday-Thursday), night owls looking for a safe, cozy place to study will be able to enter the Bookmark Café directly by swiping their Dragon Cards at the card reader right next to the door.

Public Safety staff will be on duty in the Café when the Library is closed. Walking escorts are to all locations within the Department of Public Safety patrol area for students leaving the Library at any time.

Hagerty Third Floor now Closed

The third floor of Hagerty Library is now closed to library users due to a large moving and renovation project. Library users who need access to the bound journal collection should ask at Hagerty’s circulation desk. Available materials will be paged from the 3rd floor by library staff. Please address any questions or comments to Jane Bryan, Director of Libraries, at jgb34@drexel.edu or 215-895-2750. Thank you.

What's that Wall doing There? Renovation News from Hagerty Library

A start-of-term update on the on-going renovations in Hagerty Library: Bookworm Café -- Reference Staff Relocated -- Compact Shelving -- New Locker Locations

Bassem-Gabra-in-24x7-room.gifBookmark Café
Students were excited to begin using the Bookmark Café in December, but will find more changes now and through the coming weeks. Relax in the comfy armchairs; browse the recent periodicals on the newly-installed shelves. Vending machines have been relocated to this area from the lower level, and one copier moved from the reference area.

Pending finalization of city permits, the coffee counter will open next week; 24-hour access to the Café is expected to begin by mid-terms.

Reference Staff Relocated
Hagerty Library reference librarians, who had moved to the third floor during the Law School building construction, have moved back into their former offices on the first floor. Space previously used for other purposes on the lower level, first and second floors is being converted for use as Group Study Rooms.

  • Jay Bhatt-- Engineering, room 132
  • Peggy Dominy-- Sciences and Math, room 129
  • Ann Keith Kennedy -- Media Arts and Design, room 135
  • Emily Missner -- Business, room 137
  • Tim Siftar -- Education and Information Science and Technology, room 134
  • Our new Librarian for Humanities and Social Sciences, who will join us later this mornth, will be in room 131

compact_shelving.gifCompact Shelving Installation on Lower Level
Installation of compact shelving has begun on the lower level, in the area furthest from the stairs. Journals that are heavily used will be moved from the third floor to this area.

lockers.gifNew Locker Locations
Due to the compact shelving installation on the lower level, rental lockers have been moved to new locations adjacent to the restrooms on the lower level and first floors. The lockers on the first floor are fully installed and are now available for rental -- inquire at the Circulation Desk; those on the lower level are expected to be ready by the second week of the term.

Bookmark Cafe Debuts

Bassem-Gabra-in-24x7-room.gifMechanical Engineering student Bassem Gabra was the first to take advantage of the booth-style seating in Hagerty Library's newly-opened Bookmark Cafe. Cafe-style booths and small tables are all equipped with tabletop electrical outlets. Additional furnishings expected to arrive later this week will include armchair for comfortable napping studying, and shelving for current periodicals. Soft shades temper the flood of sunlight from the south-facing windows, and hanging fixtures provide appealing lighting in all seating areas.

Students who settled in quickly for studying this morning were excited about the booth seating and easy electrical access, and looking forward to the opening of the coffee counter.

The Bookmark Cafe, like all of Hagerty Library, will be open 24/7 beginning on Thursday, December 6th and continuing through the end of the exam period; when security arrangements are complete, the Cafe will remain open all night, with a separate ID card-controlled entrance. After the end of the exam period, vending machines will be relocated from the lower level to provide all-night beverage and snack options.

Hagerty Lower Level Collections Moved

gnmoon.gif
The Juvenile Book Collection, and the "National Bibliographies" formerly shelved on the lower level of Hagerty Library have been moved temporarily to the third floor so that installation of compact shelving can begin on the lower level.

The Juvenile Books can now be found directly in front of Room 318, with the picture books to the left side of the aisle, and the chapter books/young adult books to the right. The National Bibliographies have been moved to the end of the journal shelves, near the Stern Room.

Under Construction: Please Pardon the Noise!

maxlite.gifConstruction-related noise is expected to increase as renovations proceed in the former Reserve Room, for the creation of a 24x7 study area. Disposable ear plugs are available at the Circulation Desk to help minimize the distraction.

June 25, 2007

Welcome Back!

paintcan.gifYou'll see some changes in Hagerty Library as we prepare for the renovations that will be going on over the summer.

  • Reserve books and other materials can now be checked out from the main circulation desk.
  • Current periodicals have been moved to the Reference shelves.
  • On of the coin-operated copiers has been moved to the right end of the DVD racks; the other is near the Reference Area printer. The DragonCard operated copiers are now in room.138 -- also to the left of the printer.
  • The popular magazine rack is now at the left end of the long DVD racks, and the microfilm readers have been moved in to the Circulation Desk area where assistance can be provided by library staff.
We'll have some mess and confusion as renovations proceed over the the summer, but we hope you'll be as excited as we are about the fresh new look and student-friendly features coming to Hagerty Library!
