Dean's Update: Summertime
Thoughts of easy living and days at the beach are not far from our focus in the Libraries. Many of our staff have taken time off this summer to enjoy a break from the fast-paced schedule at Drexel while others have spent time traveling to professional development events and conferences.
In this issue, I invite you to read more about how the Libraries is responding to changes in how and where one looks for information.
Drexel students will soon be able to borrow laptops from a self-checkout machine in the Bookmark Café. This new addition is a response to students who wish to work into the evening, but have concerns about transporting personal laptops when going home late at night. The checkout machine will allow the Libraries to extend circulation service beyond the hours that the Circulation Desk is staffed.
This summer, Libraries staff successfully removed the Reference Desk at W. W. Hagerty Library. For the past month, the new Library Assistance program has allowed for students, faculty and guests to go directly to the Circulation Desk to receive help from library staff. More detailed reference questions are passed to the on-call reference librarian. This individual is available during the same hours that the reference desk was always staffed. Also, appointments can be made with specialist librarians for with more specific or complex information needs.
Librarians continue to develop ways to familiarize the Drexel community with the rich collection of resources available to them. Orientation sessions are underway and guides for navigating information resources are being developed in preparation for fall term.
For those of you who are nostalgic for those lazy days of summer, check out the Libraries’ DVD and Leisure reading collections and enjoy a little escape from serious research reading.
Enjoy what remains of summer!
