The summer’s heat and humidity bring vacation plans for many, as families take a break from their hectic schedules to relax. For many of the Libraries staff the summer has also brought travel plans to professional conferences.
During summer 2012 members of the Libraries staff traveled over 40,000 miles to attend more than 13 conferences, including: the American Library Association’s annual conferences in California, the International Federation of Library Associations annual conference in Finland and the Special Libraries Association conference in Chicago.
Conferences and membership in professional organizations are an important component of the Libraries’ staff development program and of the organization component of the five-year strategic plan. Interaction and discussions with peers and presentations to national and international audiences allow staff to expand their expertise in their chosen disciplines.
