Drexel University Libraries Launches Laptop Access 24/7, Providing Laptop Access Around the Clock through a Self-Service Kiosk
Drexel University Libraries launched a new innovative library service on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, providing a dozen Apple MacBook laptops for loan anytime to anyone with a Drexel ID through a self-service kiosk. This kiosk is located in the Bookmark Café, a Libraries’ 24-hour space within W. W. Hagerty Library, at the corner of 33rd and Market Streets.
This new service began at the request of Drexel student and student government representative Omer Hashmi, last spring. Hashmi met with dean of libraries, Danuta A. Nitecki, to see if the Libraries would be able to provide laptop access into the late night hours. Hashmi explained that he was hesitant to carry his personal laptop to and from campus from his off-campus residence because it was both burdensome and posed a security risk.
At the same time, Libraries staff had identified a new technology that provided self-service equipment checkout and were motivated to pursue this new service as a result of Hashmi’s passionate request.
The kiosk was customized for Drexel to provide a dozen 15-inch laptops. The launch of the kiosk was timed to provide access during the hectic week before and during finals. Students Boby Abraham [senior, accounting], Perfecto Galrdo [junior, biology], Mary Roerty [junior, environmental studies], and Emma Ostrowski [freshman, environmental engineering] were the first four Drexel individuals check-out laptops from the kiosk.
Drexel University Libraries is the first in Philadelphia to provide this service. The Libraries will evaluate this new kiosk and results will determine if additional kiosks can be added in the libraries or around campus.
