U.S. Grant, A.J. Drexel and the Siege of Vicksburg

For the past two years the nation has marked the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, 1861-1865.  We reach the midway point this week, as we recall the Battle of Gettysburg, one of the pivotal events of the war.  Less well known, but perhaps equally important, is the battle for control of Vicksburg, which ended in Union victory one-hundred and fifty years ago today.  

Librarian Tim Siftar Hosts Instruction Sessions for Rising College Freshmen

For the fifth straight year, the Libraries' Tim Siftar, delivered a series of research instruction sessions for a class of 15 rising college freshman from the nonprofit Philadelphia Futures organization. Siftar, liaison librarian for education and information science and technology, combines English, math and library research into a three-week college preparatory curriculum, conducted at the Drexel campus.

Faculty members and the dean of Morocco’s School of Information Science (ESI) visited Drexel University Libraries on Thursday, December 1, 2011, as a part of their tour of Philadelphia, sponsored by the Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program. The group toured W. W. Hagerty Library and the Legal Research Center and met with the director of library academic partnerships, Beth Ten Have, and iSchool and education liaison librarian, Tim Siftar.

Current Drexel students, faculty and staff have access to over 32,000 scholarly books from the vendor eBrary, including titles from a wide variety of disciplines. Reading these books previously required an active internet connection, but all that has changed. Now, e-books can be downloaded and used offline by creating a PDF of a single chapter, or installing the free Adobe Digital Editions to download an entire book.  That means you can take them on the plane, overseas, anywhere!
