Where On Campus Is Jay Bhatt? Drexel’s Embedded Librarian

Two days a week you can find liaison librarian for engineering, Jay Bhatt, hanging out in a student lounge. For four hours each week Jay transports his laptop and his library expertise to the lounge to provide coaching and guidance to students and faculty on-site. Jay calls it “Being Connected,” his own take on the embedded librarianship concept, which takes librarians out of their offices and places them in the locations on campus that allow close coordination with faculty and students.

Have Laptop, Will Travel: Liaison Librarians Embedded Throughout Campus

During the past several academic terms, Liaison Librarians have stepped outside of the library to bring coaching and expertise to students and faculty members closer to the labs, classrooms and departmental spaces where they work. These added work places extend the reach of the Libraries by embedding its resources and staff knowledge within academic life on campus. This approach focuses on learners and researchers and strengthens the relationship between liaison librarians and faculty as they partner to teach students.

Libraries Provide Instruction to Over 3,000 Freshman Students through English 101 Classes

Over 3,000 students  attended the Libraries’ instructional sessions for freshman students enrolled in English 101 classes over the past several weeks. In total, 160 sessions were held and students were taught fundamental research skills and to effectively use library resources to locate scholarly information.

The sessions provided a brief introduction to the characteristics of databases and database search techniques. This was followed by students working independently to conduct research for their projects as library instructors offered individual guidance.

The Libraries welcome English 101 students

Over the next few weeks, students enrolled in English 101 classes will be headed to the library for an introduction to library research. The computer labs on the lower level of W. W. Hagerty Library will be reserved for classes most of the day.
