“When Ye Hard Work is Done”: Student Life at Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University, 1850 – 1962

When Ye Hard Work is Done draws on photographs and objects from the Drexel University College of Medicine (DUCOM) Legacy Center to provide a sense of student life in the early years of these two institutions, the Woman’s Medical College and Hahnemann University.

Sarah Daub, working with Matt Herbison (an archivist at DUCOM's Legacy Center), has just mounted a new exhibit in the second floor lobby area at Hahnemann Library, immediately outside of the library doors.  The exhibition, entitled "'When Ye Hard Work is Done': Student Life at Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University 1850-1962," draws on photographs and objects from DUCOM's Legacy Center (Archives) to provide a sense of student life in the early years of these two institutions that would eventually become Drexel University College of Medicine (DUCOM).  The title "When Y

Philadelphia, PA (July 25, 2011) – Drexel University Libraries concluded a milestone event towards shaping the future of the organization on Thursday, July 21, 2011. The event, a Future Search conference, brought together nearly 60 people, representing the diverse stakeholders of the Libraries, at the Queen Lane campus of the Drexel University College of Medicine.

Highly interactive, the process took a holistic look at the theme, The Future of Drexel’s Libraries: Advancing the University’s Strategic Transformation. Attendees reviewed shared past and present experiences to reach a common ground in identifying an exciting future for the Libraries.  This new future emphasizes collaboration, leadership, integration of technologies and curation of information resources, as well as the development of innovative spaces to advance teaching, learning and scholarship at Drexel and in the broader communities. This was accomplished through working exercises, small group discussions and creative reporting of insights.

The twilight opening began at 9 PM and featured music from DJ Mike Mannix, finals’ week snacks and colorful glow stick bracelets. As the patio outside the Terrace filled with attendees, their wrists aglow, the sighting of the first star kicked-off the opening remarks.

Dean of Libraries, Danuta A. Nitecki, spoke to the crowd about the exciting possibilities of the new Library Learning Terrace and the opportunity for student feedback to help define the space. “This twilight event is an excellent correlation for what this new Terrace is. Twilight is a not-quite-defined time and this is a not-quite-defined space. We’re looking for your input, your feedback and your requests to continue to make the Terrace the best possible learning environment for the Drexel community” Nitecki said.
