Drexel University Libraries Launches Laptop Access 24/7, Providing Laptop Access Around the Clock through a Self-Service Kiosk
Drexel University Libraries launched a new innovative library service on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, providing a dozen Apple MacBook laptops for loan anytime to anyone with a Drexel ID through a self-service kiosk. This kiosk is located in the Bookmark Café, a Libraries’ 24-hour space within W. W. Hagerty Library, at the corner of 33rd and Market Streets.
This new service began at the request of Drexel student and student government representative Omer Hashmi, last spring. Hashmi met with dean of libraries, Danuta A. Nitecki, to see if the Libraries would be able to provide laptop access into the late night hours. Hashmi explained that he was hesitant to carry his personal laptop to and from campus from his off-campus residence because it was both burdensome and posed a security risk.
As 2012 winds down, the Libraries is proud to launch new initiatives that are in direct response to student or faculty feedback and we continue to seek your input.
Last spring, a student came to my office with a request to offer extended access to laptop computers. The student expressed concern that carrying a laptop around campus into the late night hours was not only burdensome, but also a safety risk. The Libraries already provide laptops and other equipment to members of the Drexel community during our service hours, but I’m excited to announce that we were able to meet this request. Beginning in December, students are able to borrow Mac laptops anytime from a self-checkout kiosk located in the Bookmark Café.
The Libraries is excited to announce a new service – Laptop Access 24/7. This new service will provide laptop computers to students any time of day or night through a lending kiosk located in the Bookmark Café.
Celebrate the launch of this new service at our opening event and if you’re one of the first students to check out a laptop, you’ll receive a prize!

The Libraries will begin an exciting new pilot during fall term, offering laptop lending to students 24 hours a day via a lending kiosk in W. W. Hagerty Library’s Bookmark Café. This new kiosk will provide convenience and security to students who do not wish to travel late at night with their personal computers.
This new pilot is a direct result of feedback from individual students and student government organizations regarding interest in using laptops during times when a library is closed for services but overnight spaces are open.
