Alumni can now check out DVDs! [Hagerty Library]

Seinfeld resize.jpg

Why are alumni not allowed to check out DVDs? I believe we should be treated [like students] as far as using library resources are concerned. Hoping this will change something.

Thanks for your suggestion. After looking into this, Hagerty Library has changed its borrowing policy. Alumni are now allowed to check out DVDs. Enjoy!

Accessing Microfilm [Hagerty Library]

Two things would make it easier when ILL provides microfilm instead of print:
1. Chair/stool at proper height. Library chairs are too low.
2. Longer time period before time-out on software.

Thanks for your suggestion. We want to make the use of the microfilm reader as comfortable and convenient as possible. With the microfilm reader now behind the Circulation Desk, the chair at the reader has an adjustable height feature. If that does not meet your needs, please talk with someone on the Circulation staff who will help you find another chair.

Additionally, we have eliminated the time limit on the software. I hope this helps!

Heroes Season 1 [Hagerty Library]

Heroes.jpg

Please purchase Heroes Season 1.

Thank you for your recommendation. Heroes Season 1 is not scheduled to be released on DVD until August 28. At that time, I will check with our vendor to see if we can order this title.

Stay tuned for more information…

Followup:

I am pleased to say we ordered Heroes Season 1 on DVD. We’re expecting this DVD set shortly after its release date on August 28—please check back after that to see if they’re in. Enjoy!

Log on, log on, and log on again [Hagerty Library]

When we use the library computers, we sign on with our name and password, yet we still must enter our name and password again to access electronic resources or course reserves from the library website. I can see if we were accessing from home, but we are in the library and have already entered our credentials (username and password). Can that extra (yet annoying) step be eliminated somehow since we’re obviously already logged in?

Thanks for your question. Due to copyright restrictions on the electronic course reserves, students must re-enter their username and password to access these resources. Unfortunately, there is no way we can avoid this “extra step”.

As for the electronic databases, you should not have to re-enter your username and password if you have already entered that information to log on to the computer. All computers on campus should be automatically authenticated based on IP address. If you are having trouble with this again, please contact the Hagerty’s Reference Desk at 215.895.2755 so we can help you troubleshoot this problem.

Too many signs--too much confusion [Hagerty Library]

Sign Moose Resize.jpg

Why do you put so many notes everywhere? 6 “Books only”, “No VHS” at auto-checkouts, tons of “No food or drink”, etc…They make our library so ugly and unprofessional!!!

Thanks for your concern. Hagerty Library hangs signs to clarify student privileges and the library’s policies. We make an effort to post only those signs that are absolutely necessary. We will look into the possibility of creating more professional signs, but due to costliness, this may not be possible. However, we do have a graphic designer on staff who is working to make the signs less redundant and more aesthetically pleasing. We appreciate your interest in Hagerty’s appearance!

Bike Rack [Hagerty Library]

Bike Rack 2.JPG

Please get more bike racks. It doesn’t make sense to have room for 8 bikes when the library has room for a few hundred students.

Thanks for your suggestion. We agree that more bike racks are needed to better serve the students at Hagerty. As part of the renovations to the library we are considering adding more bike racks. It is important that we consider the placement of new fixtures like this in light of the big renovation picture, so please stay tuned for more details.

Resources in Asian Languages [Hagerty Library]

Please order some books in Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc.). Drexel has 20% Asian, and nearly half of the languages offered in ELC are Asian languages. So please order some so we don’t need to go to UPenn.

Hagerty Library has not collected many non-English language materials for two major reasons. The first is that our budget is dedicated to supporting the teaching and research missions of the university, and foreign language study has not historically been a major aspect of those missions. The second is the difficulties of obtaining and processing materials in non-English languages, particularly those using non-Roman scripts. We are, however, aware that Chinese and Japanese are taught in the IAS modern languages program, and that there are a number of Drexel students whose first language is something other than English. We are looking into the possibility of obtaining more non-English language materials for the collection, particularly fiction, poetry, and other items of interest. If you have particular titles or types of materials you would like to see in our collection, please let us know!

Followup:

We're now in touch with a vendor that sells Asian language books and other materials. We will do our best to collect materials that we think will be helpful and popular. As always, please let us know if you have any titles you'd like us to order.

Additionally, the Walnut Street West branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia has an extensive collection of Asian language books and videos. Here's some information on that branch: http://libwww.library.phila.gov/branches/branch.cfm?loc=WAL. Check it out!

Make sure to show your Drexel Student ID to the Free Library staff in order to obtain a library card. Enjoy!

Where can I study in peace? [Hagerty Library]

People are always so loud in the little food lounge you have. Please stop them.

We are sorry you’ve had difficulty studying in the Food and Drink Lounge in the Lower Level. The entire Lower Level of Hagerty Library, including the Food and Drink Lounge, is designated as the area where conversation and group work are allowed. If you would like a quiet place to study, we recommend you use the second and third floors—those are designated quiet areas.

Do you have educational DVDs? [Hagerty Library]

Math DVD.jpg

The majority of titles in the DVD library are not very educational. Please regularly order more mathematics/science DVDs. There are tons online.

Thank you for your suggestion. It is true there are lots of educational math/science DVDs online but most are quite expensive. We do occasionally order science DVDs—these are mostly new releases from National Geographic. But because of cost, I usually only order science-related DVDs on request by faculty or students. Please feel free to send me suggestions for purchase. Suggested titles that can be related to course work or research programs have higher priority for ordering.

Can I customize the library's homepage? [Hagerty Library]

Databases.bmp

Love the fact that the search option is back on the home page.

Not sure how easy this is but would it be possible to have the option for students to choose what databases show up on the homepage (the ones they use the most). I mainly use it from home, so I am thinking about customization, but I guess that would be hard when dealing with general computer settings. Just a thought.

But this looks great. Thanks!!

Customization of the library pages is a great idea and one that we're looking at for the not-too-distant future, but right now we simply don't have the resources to tackle the project. Please continue to give us your feedback, though—it is all noted & very much appreciated.

Dragon Card printing [Hagerty Library]

Dragon Card.bmp

Please fix the dragon card printing machine. I find it very inconvenient to have to go to the circulation desk to have them release my printing, even more so if I am working in the basement or upstairs. Thank you.

Thank you very much for expressing your concern. We too have been frustrated that the DragonCard money machine has been out of order for several months. A new machine was installed a few months ago, but this machine proved to have incompatibility issues. This machine should be up and running by the Fall Term.

In the meantime, we will be reinstalling the old DragonCard machine for your convenience. Until the old machine is back in place, please be aware that you can always add money to your DragonCard at the DragonCard office in Creese.

As always, we appreciate your patience!

We want more! [Hagerty Library]

MORE COMPUTERS! MORE TIME FOR ROOM RENTAL!

I am delighted to say that we will be replacing the public computers and loaner laptops. We will also be adding new systems for public use during the summer.

Unfortunately, we are unable to extend the length of time patrons are able to check out Group Study Rooms. These rooms are in high demand, so it is imperative that we let as many students as possible take advantage of this service. Many thanks for your patience in this regard.
