The Suggestion Box

Hot Topic

Requests have been coming in to restore the microwave in the café. Here are the two latest:

calimanoThere used to be a microwave in the Cafe area, but we could not find it anymore. I understand Taco Bell will want students to purchase their food. However they open and close at scheduled times. The cafe area is the only campus place open to students 24/7 where students are able to study. We would appreciate it a lot if we can have a microwave at the cafe, please.

Could you have a Microwave in the library? We need to be able to microwave hot food.

Thanks very much for this suggestion. This is a great idea, and library administration is currently talking with Drexel Dining Services about installing a microwave in the vending area at the back of the café.

Although there is a Taco Bell in the café, students who use the café area are welcome to bring in their own food and are in no way obligated to purchase Taco Bell food. If you are told that you may not bring outside food into the café, please see a member of the library staff.

Food Ideas

I’m wondering if making entry/exit through the bookmark cafe possible, allowing students to bring outside food into the cafe (via the cafe door) and having a manned circulation window in the bookmark cafe (as part of the main circulation desk where students can check out laptops, reserve materials, etc) would alleviate all the problems and complaints about [the food policy].

Thanks for your interesting idea. However the problem is not that students enter the café through the library, but that the café is entirely closed for renovations for the summer, leaving students with no library space for eating their meals. When the café reopens in the fall, a library dining area will be restored. Complaints about the food policy have died down considerably since the beginning of the summer, and we very much appreciate everyone’s willingness to comply with the rules until the café reopens.

Courtesy Notices

Please set up notification emails of when movies are due. We get them for books but not movies.

Thanks for the idea.

Our system sends out courtesy reminders five days before an item is due. But since DVDs are due five days after they’re checked out, the system doesn’t work.

Unfortunately our system does not allow for alternative timing of courtesy reminders, so to help you remember when your DVDs are due, we put a reminder slip in each case.

Thanks, Bill!

Bill at the front desk was extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

Thanks so much for the nice comment. We like to hear what we’re doing well and when—especially when we’re being helpful. Bill gets an extra gold star.

Library tote bags: not just for loan anymore

I like your loaner library bags. Could they be sold as a fundraiser?

We love this idea and we are looking into selling them in the near future. Thanks for the suggestion!

Wireless Update

Internet access at this library has been seriously screwed up for almost a year now, if not longer. Recently it’s gotten a little better and the effort represented by the Ethernet cords is appreciated, although they haven’t worked each time I’ve tried to use them. Still, I have to ask: who is working on the wireless? Is the administration aware of the extent of the problem? Is there any chance I’ll experience fully functional internet at the library before I graduate at the end of the summer?

Thanks for your comments. We know wireless access here and elsewhere on campus is a consistent problem. IRT recognizes the issues and believes that there are simply not enough wireless access points in the building to support the number of users we have. They are working to upgrade the wireless capacity around campus. Unfortunately, since IRT must work campus wide, there is no way to know when they will be upgrading Hagerty Library specifically.

If you plug into one of our Ethernet jacks and it doesn’t work, it may be that it was shut off because the last person who plugged into it was identified as having a virus or other problem. Unfortunately we can’t figure out if this has happened until we call IRT. If you are unable to connect through an Ethernet jack, please let a library staff member know, and we will ask IRT to re-enable it as quickly as possible.

Book Parts

Please have complete copies of the reserve text book!

Thanks for commenting. Often, instead of placing an entire book on reserve (or requiring students to purchase an entire book) instructors will request that specific pages from each book be photocopied and placed on electronic reserve for each student to use. One instructor’s requested pages may be different from another’s—even if they are teaching the same course. So if you were looking at the reserves for an instructor other than your own, you may have had trouble accessing the assigned reading.

If you are using a book that is damaged or has pages torn out, please report the problem to the reserves desk as quickly as possible so that they can work to resolve the problem.

Your Legacy

Almost all freshman year students will be enrolled in English 103 this term, and most instructors have made Legacies a required text. The library has only two copies of the book, and every time I have a submission due, I’m put on the wait list and people are already on it.

Thanks for writing. While Hagerty cannot reserve text books for each Drexel student, we can put more on copies on reserve—if you talk with your instructor. Each copy of each book that is put on reserve is specifically requested by a course instructor. If you would like additional copies of your course text to be available on reserve, please ask your instructor either to bring more copies to the reserve desk, or to talk with their specific subject librarian about purchasing more copies for the library.

Keeping it Quiet (Hagerty Library)

I tend to use the library computers to study because, in theory, it should be quiet here.  But although both the upstairs and downstairs computer areas have QUIET AREA signs posted all over, there are always people on cell phones and people talking well above a whisper.  These quiet rules are never enforced and it makes studying difficult.  There is a large group study area in the basement.  It seems unfair that people who want a quiet area to study on a computer have to put up with this every day.  Can’t someone enforce the rules?

We appreciate you expressing your concern.  If you feel uncomfortable addressing the disrupters yourself, please let the Circulation Desk staff know and we will speak to them.  Unfortunately, we could spend all day shushing people in the library, so we generally only enforce this when someone makes a complaint or if someone is being particularly disruptive.  I would also suggest checking out a laptop and Ethernet cable and heading to the glassed-in room on the lower level- this room is always very quiet.
