Logging onto the Computers [Hagerty Library]

In response to the logging into the computer profile, websites can use NTLM or Kerberos to log-in.

Thanks very much for your feedback. Unfortunately, we have no control over the technology behind DrexelOne. We recommend you contact their webmaster with functionality requests. The webmaster’s contact information is 215-895-2698 or consult@drexel.edu. Please be aware, however, that there is a security issue with implementing this type of software. The computers in the library are public while the information contained in DrexelOne is very private. If IRT enabled Kerberos authentication and a user walked away from their computer to pick up a printout or use the restroom, all their private data would be available to any other user who came up to that machine and opened a browser to Drexel One. The second layer of authentication provides an additional layer of security for some very sensitive data. We hope you understand why Kerberos would not be beneficial for your security.

Noise, Laptops, and Trees...Oh My! [Hagerty Library]

I understand the lower level glassed in room is a quiet room. However, this is insufficient quiet space. The café provides plenty of group space (along with the group study rooms), so I suggest making the entire lower level a quiet area. You need new laptops. I pay $20,000 a year here—there is funding somewhere. Otherwise, good job, but get the tree back.

Thanks for your recommendations. Due to Drexel’s heavy focus on group projects, we are committed to providing as much group study space as possible. However, we understand that students need quiet study space as well—to meet this need we have dedicated the second floor and the glassed in room in the lower level as quiet study space. Unfortunately, at this time we are unable to make the entire lower level quiet study space. As for the laptops, 20 of our 30 circulating laptops are less than a year old. In order to increase the number we could lend out, we kept 10 of the older models in circulation. We are actively seeking funding to upgrade these as well. We appreciate your patience in this matter. We miss the greenery, too, but we’re not sure what the future plans are once renovations are finished!

Computer Date & Time [Hagerty Library]

Date and Time.png

Could you please fix the four computers on the second floor of the library? The dates and times are wrong and one or two of them say the security certificate won’t be valid until 2-08 (which I imagine is linked to the date/time problem). Thanks.

Thanks for letting us know that the dates & times are wrong on our public access computers. We are looking into this problem and hope to have it resolved soon. Thanks for your patience.

Logging onto the Computers [Hagerty Library]

Computer2.jpg

When I log in it would be nice if it also logged me into DrexelOne. No?

Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, logging into a computer profile is not the same as logging into web-based DrexelOne. There really is no workaround for this. We hope you’ll view it as an added layer of security!

Printing Costs Too Much!! [Hagerty Library]

Why do printouts cost $0.25 from the counter but only $0.10 with a DragonCard?

Thanks for your question. If for some reason you can't pay with the Ultima Funds on your DragonCard, printouts cost $0.25 per page due to the extra staff time required. Our circulation desk is very busy, and it's easier on all of us if printing is self-service. Thanks for your understanding!

Slow Wireless Internet [Hagerty Library]

Laptop2.bmp

Hello, I am a laptop computer. I like to go fast on the internet. But I become sad when I am in this library, because the internet here is absurdly slow.

Dear Laptop Computer, IRT recently upgraded the wireless connections here at Hagerty, but unfortunately they are still pretty variable. Honestly, they probably will be until the construction in the building is done this summer, at which point IRT has promised to do another mapping of our building and upgrade the wireless connectivity if needed. Thanks for your patience as we sort these issues out.

Java on Laptops [Hagerty Library]

Could you please install Java on all of the laptops? All the desktops have it but when working in groups it’s easier to use laptops.

Thanks for your suggestion. Java is indeed on all of the laptops already, but we will try to make it more apparent to the user. Thanks for pointing that out.

Printing costs too much!! [Hagerty Library]

Dollar Sign.jpg

Why do we have to pay $0.10 or $0.25 for printouts?!!! We should at least have a printer with free ink and we bring the papers. Or assign every student a quota of 200 pages per term, for example. All schools around have that!!!

Thanks for your suggestion. While we agree that free printing for students would be an added benefit, we currently do not have the funding we would need to provide this service. The hardware and software costs, maintenance, and supplies for printers and copiers actually cost the libraries a lot of money. If we did not recoup those costs, then the libraries would have less money to spend on books, electronic resources, laptops for loan, new workstations, and so on. For now, though we understand your desire for free printing, the libraries could not take on this cost without University support and funding. We do encourage you to use your DragonCard, however, as that saves you time and money!

Scanner/Copiers [Hagerty Library]

Copier.jpg

Students are using the scanners to copy multiple chapters from the reserve texts. This is problematic because it is very time consuming and prevents others from using the scanner/copier.

Thanks for letting us know. Sometime in the coming weeks, we will be installing new copiers in the library—all these copiers are also equipped with the “Scan to Email” function. These additional copiers should alleviate this problem. Until we install the new machines, there are two scanners located in Room L14 in the Lower Level for your convenience.

Mike's Bikes [Hagerty Library]

Mike's Bikes.jpg

Can you put Mike's Bikes on your computer systems?

Thanks for your suggestion. We are checking with Systems to see if it is possible to add this software. In the meantime, the Rocereto Computer Lab (located on the first floor of Matheson Hall) has Mike’s Bikes installed on all their computers. Please note that the Rocereto Computer Lab is made available only to students currently enrolled in LeBow College of Business.

Printing at the Library [Hagerty Library]

Don’t charge 25 cents for a printout.

Thanks for your suggestion. Printing is still $.10 per page if you pay with the Ultima Funds on your DragonCard. If you don't have any Ultima Funds on your DragonCard, you can always add them using the machine here in the library or over at the DragonCard office. If for any reason you can't pay with your DragonCard, then printing is $.25 per page due to extra staff time required. We highly recommend you use your DragonCard--it's easier on all of us!

ESL Software [Hagerty Library]

20% of students are international students. 50% of them don’t speak English really well. Should you have any software to support that?

What kind of software are you interested in? Please respond back and let us know. We do have the Windows XP language bar and foreign language character sets installed on the computers. We do our best to serve the broad range of student needs at Drexel, so please let us know what other software would benefit you.

No Internet? [Hagerty Library]

The left-most computer on the second floor has no Internet connection.

Thanks for letting us know. I have submitted a support request, so we should have that computer fixed shortly.

Maple on Computers [Hagerty Library]

Please update Maple. The permission is expired.

Maple 11 is on all the public systems already, although Maple 10 has not yet been removed. Our apologies for the confusion—we will work on removing the old software shortly.

Printing with Flex Dollars [Hagerty Library]

Is this not a Drexel facility?? Then why ON EARTH can't I use flex dollars to print?! Absolute stupidity!!

Thanks for your question. The library is currently set up to print only using Ultima Funds. If you don't have any Ultima Funds on your DragonCard, you can always add them either at the library or at the DragonCard Office. We will look into the possibility of allowing printing with flex dollars.

EndNote [Hagerty Library]

EndNote.gif

It would be nice if the computers had EndNote on them (unless I just picked exceptions in L13, L14, and 1st floor research computers).

Thanks for asking. All of our public PCs do indeed have EndNote on them. It should be available to you right on the desktop.

Volume on Computers [Hagerty Library]

Is it possible to change the computers in Room L13 so that the volume can be controlled from the volume (mixer) icon when a user utilizes headphones? Thank you.

We apologize for overlooking that. We are working to restore that as quickly as possible.

February 11, 2008

Photoshop [Hagerty Library]

Please install Photoshop on some of the library computers.

Thanks for asking. While this would be a nice addition, our scanners and computers are for basic scanning work only. We aren't able to support higher end graphics functionality here in the library yet. Sorry!

Printing in the Library [Hagerty Library]

printer.jpg

The printer by the ground level computers is quite old and noisy. The noise is very distracting to those studying. Please invest in a new LaserJet.

Thanks for your great suggestion. You'll be happy to know new copiers and printers have indeed been ordered and should be in place within a few weeks.

Word Equation Editor 3.0 [Hagerty Library]

It's better to install Equation Editor in Word for all machines in the first floor.

Thank you for asking. All systems do already have MS Word Equation Editor 3.0 installed. If you go into Word's Insert Object Menu, you'll see Equations 3 as an option. Enjoy!

Google Toolbar [Hagerty Library]

Google Toolbar.gif

Please uninstall Google toolbar on the PCs. It is annoying, and it disables normal functions of IE, like edit--find.

Thanks for your suggestion. We'll take this into consideration, but so far this is the only request we've had to remove the Google toolbar. Most people seem to enjoy having it available. Thanks for pointing out that the Google toolbar disables normal functioning in IE—we'll investigate whether there's a workaround for that.

Printing Costs Too Much! [Hagerty Library]

The printing fee seems to be a bit excessive ($.25 per page?!). What is the reason for such a large increase in price?

What a great question.

Weak Wireless [Hagerty Library]

The dead spots and weak signal of the wireless Internet in the library is really bad and very frustrating. It’s not just my laptop, everyone experiences it. Please fix.

Thank you for your suggestion. We have received a number of complaints about this recently. Someone from IRT was here last week testing the wireless signal and strategizing how to improve the signal at Hagerty. Please let us know if things do not improve shortly.

What's Wrong With Matlab? [Hagerty Library]

Fix Matlab 7.4 on basement computers.

After testing Matlab on the lower level computers, we can’t find anything wrong with them. Can you be more specific as to the problem you are experiencing? Thanks!

Log on, log on, and log on again [Hagerty Library]

When we use the library computers, we sign on with our name and password, yet we still must enter our name and password again to access electronic resources or course reserves from the library website. I can see if we were accessing from home, but we are in the library and have already entered our credentials (username and password). Can that extra (yet annoying) step be eliminated somehow since we’re obviously already logged in?

Thanks for your question. Due to copyright restrictions on the electronic course reserves, students must re-enter their username and password to access these resources. Unfortunately, there is no way we can avoid this “extra step”.

As for the electronic databases, you should not have to re-enter your username and password if you have already entered that information to log on to the computer. All computers on campus should be automatically authenticated based on IP address. If you are having trouble with this again, please contact the Hagerty’s Reference Desk at 215.895.2755 so we can help you troubleshoot this problem.

Can I customize the library's homepage? [Hagerty Library]

Databases.bmp

Love the fact that the search option is back on the home page.

Not sure how easy this is but would it be possible to have the option for students to choose what databases show up on the homepage (the ones they use the most). I mainly use it from home, so I am thinking about customization, but I guess that would be hard when dealing with general computer settings. Just a thought.

But this looks great. Thanks!!

Customization of the library pages is a great idea and one that we're looking at for the not-too-distant future, but right now we simply don't have the resources to tackle the project. Please continue to give us your feedback, though—it is all noted & very much appreciated.

Dragon Card printing [Hagerty Library]

Dragon Card.bmp

Please fix the dragon card printing machine. I find it very inconvenient to have to go to the circulation desk to have them release my printing, even more so if I am working in the basement or upstairs. Thank you.

Thank you very much for expressing your concern. We too have been frustrated that the DragonCard money machine has been out of order for several months. A new machine was installed a few months ago, but this machine proved to have incompatibility issues. This machine should be up and running by the Fall Term.

In the meantime, we will be reinstalling the old DragonCard machine for your convenience. Until the old machine is back in place, please be aware that you can always add money to your DragonCard at the DragonCard office in Creese.

As always, we appreciate your patience!

We want more! [Hagerty Library]

MORE COMPUTERS! MORE TIME FOR ROOM RENTAL!

I am delighted to say that we will be replacing the public computers and loaner laptops. We will also be adding new systems for public use during the summer.

Unfortunately, we are unable to extend the length of time patrons are able to check out Group Study Rooms. These rooms are in high demand, so it is imperative that we let as many students as possible take advantage of this service. Many thanks for your patience in this regard.

June 02, 2007

Laptops are in high demand! [Hagerty Library]

Laptop.bmp

Please have more laptops available for students. Thanks!!

Thanks for your suggestion. We realize laptops are in high demand here at Hagerty Library. This summer we will be purchasing twenty new laptops to supplement and replace the older laptops. Additionally, we will have ten new laptops for circulation at Hahnemann Library. We hope you enjoy these new laptops!

Is my password public? [Hagerty Library]

When typing my username/password to enter a private online account (DrexelOne, Facebook, etc.), Windows asks if it should memorize this information for later use. If I accidentally hit “ok”, everyone using that computer will have access to my accounts. Please disable this feature of Windows.

Since you are logging into these systems with your Drexel username and password, your information is only available to your login and cannot be retrieved by anyone else using the same computer.

Public Computers [Hagerty Library]

Computer.JPG

The computers on the second floor are constantly taken up by people checking their e-mail so that one can't look up a book. Can we have at least one computer dedicated entirely to book look-up (since this is a library after all)?

Thanks for your suggestion. This summer we are starting on some renovations that will mean many more computers in the atrium areas of the second and third floors. We will also be reinstalling computers on the look-up stands scattered around the stacks on the second and third floors. We hope you enjoy the new computers!

Out of Order, Again?! [Hagerty Library]

Out of Order.jpg

7 of the 36 computers (almost 20%) on the main floor of the library are "Out of Order." It seems like every time I walk in, another computer has been added to the "Out of Order" list, but none of the previously broken computers have been fixed. Please let us (the students) know who we need to go to in order to get the library the support it needs to make sure ALL computers are working for us. Thank you.

Thank you very much for expressing your concern. We too have been frustrated by an aging public systems infrastructure, and I am delighted to say that we will be replacing the public computers and loaner laptops. We will also be adding new systems for public use by the beginning of the summer. We continue to try to fix the systems on the floor as soon as we possibly can, and we are improving our turnaround times in this regard. Many thanks for your attention and patience in this regard.

New Scanners, Please! [Hagerty Library]

Scanner.jpg

I would love for the library to invest some money in some new scanners! They are the same ones from when I was an undergrad and I graduated in 2003! Thanks! Also, better scanner software. P.S. The lid on the current scanner is broken!

Thank you for your suggestion. We are indeed planning to upgrade our scanners by the beginning of the next school year. Stay tuned for more details.

Movie Viewing Rooms [Hagerty Library]

TV.jpg

Why do the VHS and DVD playing machines and TVs not work and no one knows how to fix them??

Thank you for your question. Our VHS & DVD players do in fact work generally, but we are investigating updating the hardware necessary to provide a better viewing experience for our students. Please stay tuned for more details.

Mozilla Firefox [Hagerty Library]

Firefox.jpg

Please install Firefox on the stand-up computer stations. I hate IE7.

Thanks very much for your suggestion. Firefox is a standard part of our installation routine and will be on the standalone systems at the start of the next term. Enjoy!

Open Source Software [Hagerty Library]

Linux.gif

Why are all of your computers still running that crappy Microsux OS? And now I hear that you’re actually making plans for Windows Vista?!?! I’ve got two words for you: open source! Here’s two more: Get Linux!!

Thank you for your suggestion, we do not plan to implement MS Vista anytime soon in the libraries. We are examining the possibilities of having Linux installations available on public computers, but we're too early in the evaluation process for me to tell you for certain when that might occur if we decide to move ahead with that plan.
