In
the latter half of the 19th century:
- The
number of papers being published reached a critical mass.
- An
“index” to the body of literature was needed.
- It
became evident right away that a separate index was needed for
each of the disciplines.
- Each
discipline had its own vocabulary and heirarchy of terms.
- Scientists
in each discipline had different ways of accessing their literature.
