Drexel University Archives will extend access to two diaries in the collection through a collaboration with the Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries and the University of Pennsylvania's Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books, and Manuscripts.
Drexel University Archives contributed digitized images of Rebecca Thomas's recipe book and Francis Martin Drexel's travel journal. Rebecca Thomas was a resident of early 19th-century Burlington, New Jersey. She recorded recipes, arithmetic lessons, and folk remedies in a small journal that brings to life the day-to-day concerns of early American women.

A native Pennsylvanian, Colonel Thomas A. Scott (1823-1881) was Vice-President of the Pennsylvania Railroad when he was called to Washington to serve the War Department during the Civil War. The Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton knew of Scott's executive capabilities and appointed him Assistant Secretary of War in charge of transportation and telegraph lines.

A lifelong friend of Anthony J. Drexel, George W. Childs (1829-1894) played a major role in the founding of Drexel. Childs was the first Vice-President of the Board of Trustees of the Drexel Institute, serving as President of the Board upon the death of the Founder.
The Archives Reading Room will feature a display materials that document Childs's life and lasting impact on Drexel. All who attend will have the opportunity to examine these 19th-century documents hands-on. Refreshments (including birthday cake) will be served in an adjoining room.

A researcher contacted us recently to ask about local businesses or institutions that used to exist on the present site of Drexel's campus. Fortunately, there is a fine online tool for discovering the geographic history of Drexel and the city beyond:
the Greater Philadelphia GeoHistory Network (GPGN). If you'd like to see what Philadelphia used to look like (particularly our little corner of West Philly) check it out! A particularly nice feature is the
interactive map viewer, which lets you layer old maps and atlases over today's street maps. G. W. Bromley's 1895 Philadelphia Atlas shows that the Main Building faced the Junction Car Works, which built railroad cars. That's an appropriate coincidence, given Anthony J. Drexel's longtime business connections with the railroad industry.

William Walsh Hagerty (1916-1986) served as president of Drexel from September 1, 1963, to his retirement in 1984 -- at nearly 21 years, Drexel's longest presidency. Like his predecessor James Creese, Hagerty also oversaw a long period of expansion for Drexel; most notably, the school's transformation from an institute of technology into Drexel University in 1970.

Robert C. Disque (1883-1968) served as the most frequent temporary head of Drexel Institute of Technology, as the chair of interim administrative committees after the deaths of Kenneth Matheson in 1931 and Parke Kolbe in 1942, and as interim president after the resignation of George Rea in 1944.

The Archives just received a copy of Sex Variant Woman: The Life of Jeanette Howard Foster, by Joanne Passet. Foster taught library science at the Drexel Institute from 1937-1948 and is best known for her 1956 book, Sex variant women in literature; a historical and quantitative survey.

The first student housing for women was built in 1918. Construction began on the Sarah Drexel Van Rensselaer Dormitory for Women in 1931.
In 1919, Drexel awarded its first degrees to women.
In 1938, Edith M. Rood became first woman editor of The Triangle.
In 1943, women first enrolled in the School of Engineering. The Drexel Society of Women Engineers was founded three years later.
