'As important as academic advising is the more wide-ranging yet personal task of mentoring. Advisers can assume this role, but others can be found as well: fellow undergraduates, senior faculty no longer involved in research, or engineers working in industry. Good mentoring can help students see themselves as engineers and feel they belong in engineering.'
