Dean’s Update: Welcome Back!

Dean’s Update: Welcome Back!

[The Dean's Update is a column introducing each issue of the Libraries' monthly e-newsletter In Circulation.]

It is an exciting and busy time in the Libraries as we start the new academic year. Only a few days into the term and already our libraries are filled with students reading and working at computers. The intensity of Drexel students continues to impress me. It is like none other I have experienced, even in the large research libraries of the big state universities and elite private colleges where I spent my former years as a library administrator.

In preparation for the beginning of the year, our staff in the Libraries has been busy – as shown in our creative Welcome Back video. We also continued our signature Personal Librarian program and continually hear appreciation from parents for this individualized support provided to their new Dragons. Our staff was also present at many of the orientation fairs and welcome back week activities. Library staff offered tours in September to further explain best ways to utilize library services and resources.

This month we continue efforts to strengthen connections to ideas and scholarship. The Libraries will host an exhibit, The Power of Civil Society: The Fate of Jews in Bulgaria, which will open with a reception in early November. Dates for the upcoming ScholarSip event have also been set with the first event taking place on December 3, 2013 at McAllister Hall’s Sky View Room. Professor Rob D’Orvido will provide the food for thought presentation on this research related to cyber security.

I hope you share the excitement of this new year and I extend best wishes for a productive and stimulating year!
