Geography Resources for Teacher Ed Students

The world is yours to explore! That's the message these great library resources can help k-12 teachers share with their students. Where's Myanmar? What do people there look like? What's the weather like? What do they do for a living? How about their art? Religion? Music? Government? Demographics? Demo-what? Help your students answer these questions and more with the great lineup of free and subscribed resources described below.

Finding Books:

CIA World Factbook - Prepared by the Central Intelligence Agency, the World Factbook provides national-level information on countries, territories, and dependencies.

CountryWatch offers succinct, yet detailed, snapshots of 192 countries from around the world. Included are overviews of each country's cultural etiquette, as well as economic, political, environmental, and investment situations. Use the pull-down menu on the top right corner of the screen to look up countries.

Global Road Warrior is a comprehensive business travel, telecommunications and business culture reference.. The Global Road Warrior covers 175 countries. Each country listing includes: Key facts, Communications, Service support and Technical support contacts, Business culture insights, Language tips, top 150 travel web sites, regional maps, international dialing guide, mobile connectivity problems and solutions, currencies of the world and more.

Databases: Images
AP Images - an International photo archive (1826-present), a Graphics Database which contains graphics, maps, illustrations and logos, and an AP Audio Database which contains searchable audio clips dating back to the 1920s.

ArtSTOR is a repository of hundreds of thousands of digital images and related data, along with the tools to actively use those images and a restricted usage environment that seeks to balance the rights of content providers with the needs and interests of content users.

Databases: Music
Naxos Music Library is a comprehensive collection of classical music available online. It includes the complete Naxos and Marco Polo catalogues of over 130,000 tracks, including Classical music, Jazz, World, Folk and Chinese music. Whilst listening, you can read notes on the works being played as well as biographical information on composers or artists in Naxos's extensive database. All these can be accessible from computers in academic libraries, home or office.

Databases: Maps
SimplyMap is a web-based mapping application that lets users create professional-quality thematic maps and reports using United States demographic, business, and marketing data. Data sources include the U.S. Census and Census projections.

Free Websites
GoogleMaps & GoogleEarth - two tools in the Google suite. GMaps is for flat maps showing places, terrain and satellite views with best coverage in the USA. GEarth offers the 3-D flying experience that has proven very popular.
