Archives Acquisitions: January 2016

The University Archives regularly adds new pieces of Drexel history to the collection on a including artifacts, documents, photographs and electronic files. These new acquisitions help to capture and record Drexel's unique story. This month the Archives acquired documents pertaining to Drexel's name change. In 1970 Drexel changed the name of the institution from the Drexel Institute of Technology to Drexel University.

Drexel University Libraries Contributes Two Cultural Pieces to Regional Diaries Initiative

Drexel University Archives will extend access to two diaries in the collection through a collaboration with the Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries and the University of Pennsylvania's Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books, and Manuscripts. Drexel University Archives contributed digitized images of Rebecca Thomas's recipe book and Francis Martin Drexel's travel journal. Rebecca Thomas was a resident of early 19th-century Burlington, New Jersey. She recorded recipes, arithmetic lessons, and folk remedies in a small journal that brings to life the day-to-day concerns of early American women.

This month marks the 122nd anniversary of the first classes at Drexel. The Drexel Institute was dedicated in December 17, 1891, but classes didn't begin until January 1892.

Today is the start of Drexel's winter quarter and the campus is already bustling. Drexel adopted the quarter schedule in 1919, as part of the new cooperative education program instituted by then-president Hollis Godfrey.

Howard Pyle (1853-1911)

The University Archives' Pyle collection consists of correspondence and pamphlets documenting his time as an instructor in the school of illustration at Drexel as well as publications about Pyle.

Archives is open and dry

The Archives is open today on our regular schedule. Hagerty Library experienced no flooding and our collections are safe and dry. We share the sentiments of Dean of Libraries, Danuta Nitecki, that we escaped damage 'in large part due to the superb preparation and vigilant watch given us by members of campus Facilities.'

Although the Lower Level of Hagerty is still under renovation, the Archives is open weekday afternoons from 1-5 and mornings by appointment. The Archives will be closed to the public today as we clean up from a weekend flood. There was no damage to our collections and we will reopen as soon as we can. You can still reach us by phone or email.
