Drexel Honors Faculty, Staff and Student Authors and Editors at 2018 Annual Event

March 2, 2018

On February 26, 2018, the Drexel University Libraries and the Office of the Provost hosted the sixth annual Celebrating Drexel Authors Event. This year, the event honored a total of 77 Drexel authors with publications in 2017.

Of the 77 Drexel authors recognized during the 2018 event, 55 were faculty, staff and students who authored or edited books published during the calendar year. Their published works included textbooks and fire safety and construction codes, ethnographic studies, works of fiction and books of poetry.

New for 2018, the event also recognized 24 Drexel authors of highly-cited journal articles and conference proceedings papers. These authors’ peer-reviewed works were published in 2017 and were already highly cited in the same calendar year. Their papers reached a highly cited threshold set by citation counts taken by Clarivate Analytics in October 2017, placing them in the top 1% of their academic field. This is distinctive recognition at a global level.

During the program, Danuta A. Nitecki, PhD, Dean of Drexel University Libraries, thanked the librarians and communication staff for undertaking the challenging tasks each year to identify Drexel publications.

“Since we began, identifying Drexel authors is becoming increasingly complicated as the definition of “scholarly communications” is changing. A Scholarly “publication” now extends beyond formal books and journal articles,” Nitecki said during her welcoming remarks. “Today, it also includes research outputs shared through different points in the research process—such as the raw data gathered from surveys or created through experiments, the data results produced through computational or visualization analyses, interactive software programs or computer models, as well as preliminary versions of papers, all of which are being deposited into various repositories.”

Drexel Libraries staff will continue to meet these challenges, applying their professional expertise in metadata, curation, system integration and services to ensure that such elements of scholarship are appropriately managed and made available for others to use in their own research. And as scholarly communication evolves, the Libraries will continue to rethink how events like this one can recognize new categories of authors, including creators of research datasets and other outputs.

The event program, including a list of the 2018 honorees, is available online. A recording of the Celebrating Drexel Authors event is also available on the Drexel University YouTube Channel.

Congratulations to all the 2017 Drexel authors!
